Spitfire Spitfire ID #'s?

Question for you guys, what does the # on the driver's side frame by the fire wall represent? I'd always thought it was the same as the VIN, but apparently not on my car. Thanx!

Do you mean on the chassis frame? AFAIK, "VINs" only appear on the commission number plate (and, on 1969 and later "Federal" cars, on a tag on the inside of windshield post and said number visible through the windshield). There are also body numbers (LH "scuttle" side panel near the bonnet catch) and chassis/frame numbers as well as those numbers for engine, gearbox and differential. The numbers tend to correlate somewhat, but none would match any other.

And remember that Triumph didn't really use "VIN's" (as in the seventeen digit alpha-numeric official 'VIN') until mid 1979 when they started producing Convertible TR7's and TR8's. Prior to that, those numbers are referred to as 'Chassis Prefix and numbering codes'.

Very important info to know if your 'VIN' on your title is off by one letter/number than your car. The last six digits in a true seventeen digit "VIN" is the cars actual identity. Not always the case on pre-'VIN' Triumphs as the last few digits are usually letters that specify option codes.

This knowledge can streamline the process when correcting a title as the employees of clerks offices for counties and states are not trained when it comes to dealing with cars without true "VIN's".

Been there and done that.

Thanx Andy. The #'s on the car match the title, so no problems there. I just thought that the #'son the frame tag matched the others is all.
