Spitfire spitfire fuel line plumbing?

Much progress is being made on my soon to be resurrected Spitfire. The brakes and clutch are bled, dash and wiring in, motor is in, etc. One problem I'm having is remembering how to plumb the fuel system. Is the line on the passenger side of the car(MK IV) a vent meant to go to a charcoal canister or is it a return line? I could swear the extra outlet on my filter(see picture) was plump into it.

I'm reasonably certain (tho not positive) it should be a vent line to the carbon canister. At least that's the info I have for a Mk 3 & a 1500 ... might be they did something different for the Mk 4 (as lots of other details changed every year), but I've never heard of a carby Triumph having a return line (unless it was added).

But I'm also guessing that's an incorrect filter as well.

...which makes sense, since I don't think what is pictured is the original routing or composition of the fuel line. At least on older Heralds and Spitfires, it went forward from the fuel pump and around and over the front of the engine. And there usually was some steel line involved, not just a rubber fuel line.
 
I think you guys are right. I'm fairly positive that the PO had that by-pass plumbed into the tank vent! I would look at it, then the tank vent, then back... Kinda left me scratching my head. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonod.gif Hey Andy, I'm headin' up the mountain today to the place with the Herald. I'll get the the #'s for sure this time.
 
My ESP tells me the Herald serial number ought to be something like GA16005LCV :smile:. Am I close? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
