Spitfire spitfire badges & weather

- spitfire finally touched down today...been airborne for 4 months (on jack stands). All new rear suspension, universal joints, brakes (front & rear), rebuilt master, partial rebuild front suspension (to be completed)...all done with lots of help from members of the forum.

- took it for a spin today, started first time after 4 months. Went to Wickford Town Beach and Narragansett Beach...had the best intentions of posting pictures (a la tinster) but the wife's digi camera failed...didn't like the cold. It was about 38 today with a windchill of 25!

- anyway, I need a little help with trim. Bought these new badge inserts off ebay (would you believe the guy was from Coventry, UK). I bought 2 and he sent me 3...which is great news 'cos the RAF badge on the front is equally faded.

- I have the late mk3 spit. PO left rear wing badges and rear trunk badge in the trunk....probably 'cos they were in such bad shape. Need some dimensions to re-fit. I think the mk4 spit had a similar badge on the wings which reads "SPITFIREIV"...the location is probably the same. Is the badge on the centerline of the light?

- The triumph badge on the trunk, I believe was only fitted to the late mk3. Can anyone please advise location?

thanks again

I can't help on fender placement. I just MIGHT be able to help on the trunk lid placement; I'll have to see if I still have the one '70 trunk lid.

You mentioned the "RAF" badge on the front. Should you wish to restore that, and the chrome is ok, Joe Curry has reproduced the decal inserts.

Disclaimer: I don't really have any financial interest here, but Joe used my badge as a prototype. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

- thanks for looking Andy.

I have contacted Joe Curry....and had planned on buying his refurb kit...even had the check written out. My RAF badge chrome is OK and red/blue OK. The "spitfire" part is as faded as the one in the picture above (no black left).

Fortunately I received 3 of the original "spitfire" foil inserts. I didn't realize until this past weekend that the rear wing badges and RAF badge all take the same one. Will keep Joe's number/address just in case.

As it turns out, maybe I can help on fender placement. These are not laser-precision measurements, but as best I can measure, the HOLES for the fender badges are 1" below a line drawn across the very top edge of a mounted marker light gasket. So they are in line with the light for the most part. These holes, BTW, are approx. 4/5" apart.

As for the trunk lid, the HOLES are spaced about 5 1/8" apart. The right most hole is 3" from the right-hand edge of the lid and 2 21/32" from the bottom edge. The left most hole is 2 3/4" from the bottom edge.

Hope that helps!

Oh, and just to clarify, I measured (as best I could) from the center of each hole.

Andy,

Dims for the trunk were spot on...had it all marked out using masking tape and your dims. Just before drilling I thought I'd check the inside to make sure I wouldn't be drilling into anything important. I know, should have checked sooner, and the original holes were there filled in. I drilled from the inside out and the holes came out right on the money. Trunk badge now fitted.

Need a dimension on the fender...I've got it all marked out with the masking tape as you describe above...but I'm missing the "A" dimension on my picture in original post (rubber light gasket to edge of badge, if fitted, or first hole in fender). I've checked in the trunk....no filled holes to use this time!

Thanks again

Ah, sorry! I had that written down but forgot to include it in the first post. The first hole is 1 and 15/32" (more or less) from the edge of the gasket on the lamp body, and the holes are 4 and 1/2" apart (not 4/5" as I typed previously). Hope that's a bit clearer!
