Spitfire Spitfire 4 Wiper Motor

I am toying with fate, but I want to remove my wiper motor to freshen up the outside housing. I have removed the 4 bolts that hold it to the firewall, but can not find anywhere how to remove the cable from the housing to allow removal from the vehicle. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Already have the cover off. The part I am not sure of is how to disconnect the cable from the motor assembly.

My bad earlier. In looking at the Spare Parts Catalogue, it appears the cable end simply slips over a post on a rod that is fastened to the gear assembly. Once the cover is off, the cable end should lift right off that rod, although there might be a small "c" clip or similar?

If it's the same as the TR wiper motor (DR3A), there is a clip to remove and then a link to lift away. That frees the inner cable, then the outer cable just pulls up out of a slot.

The link is item 8 in this illustration, the clip is at the top of the post on the gear.

Yeah, there are a couple of other components there that are not shown either, like the brass "finger" that forms half of the park switch. ISTR there might be a flat washer involved as well.

Joe, the easiest thing is to take ooff the wiper blades and arms, then pull the cable out of the bundy pipe. You'll then be able to grease it a bit so when you shove it back in the motor will have an easier job.

This is what it looks like in real life.
That's the later wiper motor, not the one shown in the SPC or on Canley Classic's website for Joe's Spitfire 4 (aka Mk 1). But it still comes apart the same way.

Or as Roger says, you can pull the rack out leaving it attached to the motor if you want. Makes kind of a mess IMO, the rack will be covered in old black grease that will mark whatever it touches and it's hard to control the rack & motor at the same time. But it will work. You'll probably also have to pull the arms off the spindles to get it all timed properly once it's back together.

Thanks all! Your info helped me get it disassembled without parts flying everywhere or worse something ending up bent or destroyed. I have sanded and applied first coat of paint(rust converter). Final color and then clearcoat to follow.

The Canley Classics drawings are a big help for a visual person like me.
