Hey folks. I just aquired another MG Midget but this is a later one with the Spit engine in it and it is new to me. I would appreciate any pointers in what to check and look out for with this engine. I have been told about and will check the end play in the crank for thrust washer problems. Anything else that I need to take a hard look at?
I have been told that this engine was rebuilt but the guy who had the car when that was done has since passed away.
I will be bringing the car home this evening and will be giving it a more thorough look then.
 
If it has the thrust washer problem, the engine is junk. Rebuild it or throw it away and get a good low mileage long block.

Keep it full of oil, and consider adding an oil cooler too. The engine bay of these puppies gets really hot.
 
Does it not have an oil cooler? I need to look this thing over good and see what the differences are between it and my 71 with the A-series engine. I just fetched it home this evening and got it inside before dark. I can do a better assessment tomorrow. It came with a pickup truck load of parts as well. Whew, beginning again with another one.
