Spitfire Spit Bumpers

I think that the Spitfire is one of the sleekest roadsters ever. However (IMHO), the black rubber bumpers spoil the overall look, especially the two large push-pads in the front. How tough is it to switch a Spit back to steel bumpers? I have seen nice paint jobs on MGB rubber bumpers, but I don't think that painting a Spit's bumper would work as well.

Huck,

It isn't a very difficult operation. The rear bumper is very easy just unbolt that ugly rubber thing and bolt on a steel bumper. The front bumper is a bit more interesting. After you have taken the rubber one off you will have to cut off the bracket that held those gigantic rubber bullet things in place. Its just welded onto the ends of the frame, once this is done I think you can use an older style hinge cover, I am making custom ones for mine. Also you will have to do something about the air intake under the bumber, because the old rubber bumber was so much thicker than your new bumber you are going to probably want to make a grill or something to go there, you may also want to cut off the bumber bracket in between the hinges, it bolts on on the top but is welded to the frame on the bottom. Overall changing bumpers to an older style isn't hard if you are willing to do some cutting on the front.

Cheers,

Thanks. If it were just possible to cut back those bullet things to where they were closer, maybe even flush with the rest of the bumper, then a paint job might work. But, I assume that there is some sort of metal underneath. Its a shame really, because the painted bumper MGB's look pretty nice.
