Spinner woes

Just thought that I would drop this in.

Just bought a brand new set of spinners ( they are 4 years old but still in their original wrappers) for slightly less than half price, a guy was selling them off to clear his garage. :wink-new:

They are the 12TPI variety to suit my BJ7 and they looked great.

Tried them for fit and - they don't :distress:

Double checked the thread pitch and that was fine :chuncky:

Checked out the root dimension with my trusty vernier gauge and compared it with my old units there is a 0.58 mm difference.

Talked to my Healey Guru and discovered that there was a batch made that would not fit, the vendor will take them back but before I return them I have been trying to find a firm to open up the threads as it seems to be a terrific waste but can not find anyone interested.

I have however found an engineering firm that makes them along with other items such as brake drums and they are cheaper than those available from the usual Healey Suspects ( suppliers) so I suppose I have gained something from this exercise.

Just wondering if any of you guys have had similar experiences in the past.

Maybe it's just me, but if someones selling you brand new parts just to his garage there may be a reason they are doing so. There was "talk" going around quite some time ago abut spinners not fitting and I'm sure people forgot about the "why" of it. I guess anyone buying spinners from an individual should take their hub to the place of sale and try them out first. Those new spinners that didn't fit are still around.

Well

I have my money back and the vendor did not want the spinners back.

Not having much luck with engineering firms over here, guess I will turn them into cigarette ash trays

I had my spinners re-chromed and I'm happy with them. When they polish the spinners before the final chrome tank process you can lose some of the clarity of the writing on them. But, who really bends down to read the writing anyways?

I had a problem with the threads being off on an adjustable steering wheel. A non-automotive machine shop fixed them for the cost of a thread die, which I now own.
