I replaced my smoothcase with a ribcase last year in my bugeye. The tranny was not rebuilt, but works fine. I had noticed some vagueness in the speedometer after I put the car back on the road last summer- it was not steady. I have the transmission out now and I've noticed that if I hold the speedometer gear or the distance piece with my finger (through the pinion sleeve hole), and rotate the 3rd motion (output) shaft, the resistance will prevent the gear from turning with the shaft. Same for the distance piece. In the exploded view I cannot see what keeps the gear turning with the shaft except that it is held between the distance piece to the front, and the nut and lockwasher at the output end.
Is it normal that the gear can be restrained from turning so easily, and if not, is the fix to tighten the nut on the shaft?
Thanks,
Michael
