Speedometer Pinion

I installed a new speedometer cable over the weekend. Speedometer still does not turn. I'll hook the old one up and make sure the needle turns. If it works then I guess something is wrong with the speedometer pinion. How hard is it to replace?

Make sure you test the speedo first by using your drill in reverse to see if speedo turns. A Square Headed Screw drill bit driver can emulate a speedo cable pretty well. There is a good document on Smith's Speedo repair I've got if you are interested.

Speedo pinion is not that hard to replace! Check and make sure everything is properly mated first (though I suppose you have already since you repleced the cable!). Do drain tranny oil first to avoid a puddle! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif And a large adjustable wrench will work!

Just checked the Mo$$ catalog. A replacement pinion is almost $75! Ouch! Anyone got a spare?

Check with Tony.
