Speedometer / Dash

My initial plan was to remove my speedo for repair. My local wrench told me that on the later models, they inserted into the dash and then twisted, sort of a cam lock. I didn't ask which direction it should turn. Mine doesn't budge in either direction. Does any one know if it is CW or CCW, looking at the front of the gauge?

Having run into this problem, I started pondering the question of replacing the dash itself. In doing so, I would have access to the back of the speedo, and the dash is starting to show some cracks. The Moss catalog describes the item as a "dash cover". What is meant by "cover"? Does it install right over the top of the old dash; do I have to peel the old dash plastic off of a metal backing; or do I remove all the bits from the old dash, install them in the new dash, and put it all back into the car?

I would still prefer to remove only the speedo at this time. The cost is starting to add up.

Regards,
Bob

Either way...there are 3 little slots in the dash you have to align with 3 little tabs on the side of the speedo...reason is won't budge is that it has 30+ years of sitting in one place....try a tiny screwdriver around its edges to break loose all the crud, etc....but be careful.

There's a complete new dash cover available from Moss & also a dash topper....depends on where your cracks are as to which you want.

Just remove the speedo.

Tony,

Thanks, I will try the screw driver method.

I know about the topper - I put that on years ago. In the next year or 3, I will be considering the full dash. I was wondering if it just covered the old dash, like the topper did, or did it fully replace the dash.

"The cost is starting to add up.."
My expenses have never stopped!! Get used to it! I bought mine for $900 and now I'm at $3,500+ and counting. I was given a budget of $2,000 to get it dependable for my wife. After that budget was blown (from the engine needing a rebuild) the rest of the investment came from selling everything I can get my hands on to support this "hobby."

I bought the dash cover and it is injection molded plastic. It looks good, but the original cover is much nicer. It only covers the upper portion of the dash, not the area with the instruments. Not sure what's available as an alternate because, like you, I'm "frugal" (not cheap, but frugal) and opted for the affordable replacement.

A new dash pad will replace everything but some of the foam on the metal dash base. Kind of a pitb but when its done it's so worth it.

Edward - what you bought was the topper....what Stewart & I are talking about is an entirely new dash cover.....remove dash, remove everything on it, remove old vinyl, install new vinyl.
