my speedometer cable is making a rubbing noise

do I need to lubricate it? my speedometer is acting all jumpy as well

the connection was loose, but even after tightening it it still made noise, and was jumpy

any idea?

Aye. Lub the cable.

Lube the cable and make sure it's not kinked somewhere on it's way to the speedometer gear on the transmission. Mine did the same thing and around 65 mph snapped.

they make a fun "spoing!" sound when the break ..
hhmmm gee how do i know that?

I haven't done my Sprite yet, but the cable should unscrew from both the speedo and the transmission. I get a handful of lithium bearing grease and dump in some graphite powder for good measure and mix it all together and lube the cable liberally with that mixture.

I did this procedure in my pickup and it did start to make noise again, but it was -15F outside at the time. So I think the Spridgets should be safe.

Usually you undo either end of the cable (it's just has a housing that screws onto the back of the speedometer by hand) and the inner part of the cable pulls all the way free from the sheath.

that inner part is what you wanna slather in grease and stick it back into the sheath and screw the sheath back onto the speedo.

You might need pliers to initially loosen it, but it only needs to be reinstalled finger tight.

ahhhhhhhhh, now I understand !!!!

so I should be able to pull out the inside of the cable, after disconnecting it from the speedometer and transmission, lube, and reassemble.

thanks for the clarification Luke
