Speedometer and cable

On my wife's Spitfire MkII with a late single rail transmission and J overdrive... When I use a stub of speedo cable into the angle drive the cable spins as the car moves. I think the speedo should work. I hook up the full cable and it does not spin. The same cable, speedo combination works in the other car, same kind of transmission and overdrive. I wanted to drive a rally today and started this quest last weekend. How hard could it be... excahnge speedo and cable. T.T.

OK, so the next logical question is, if you spin your cable, disconnected from the angle drive but connected to the speedometer, does the speedo needle move?
