Speedo/Tach Style

Here are the current speedo and tach in my car:

They are different styles. Which one is appropriate for a 59 Sprite? I think the tach is the correct one. I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to search the internet for the answer.

If the tach is correct, is the speedo from a later sprite or from a midget? It is hidden in the pic, but they both have a high-beam indicator. I think the speedo should have the generator light.

Thanks,

David

The tach is the correct style. The speedometer is from a newer Midget or Sprite.

Brian is right but I think that speedo must be from an MGB (or similar) since it goes up pretty high!

I believe the speedo light is indicating ignition on, mine turns on when key is turned to start position and stays on when running.

That light should be on when ign is on and engine off or at idle. Otherwise should be on. This indicates that generator is charging.

Problem is.. the bugeye is unique... Tach has ignition light and speedo has the dimmer light... opposite in sprite II etc. i.e. If your tach has a blue light it is not a bugeye tach..

Below are scans from my Driver's Handbook dated July 1958

Item 10 is the tachometer that includes item 11 - High-beam indicator

Item 13 is the speedometer that includes item 14 - Ignition warning light.

For the ignition light, the handbook states:

<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 10pt"><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'"><span style="font-style: italic">Ignition Warning Light:</span> Should glow red when ignition is switched on
and fade out when the generator starts charging the battery.</span> </span></span>

That is true, however, the light is only a replaceable lens. Try a piece of plastic, very thin, like from filing labels. Glue it on with a bit of crazy glue and cut it out with a hole punch.

Kind of like shoe polish, got to think out side of the box at times. LOL

Hay, both really work. Ask Miss Agatha.
