Smiths speedo still not working just installed the a new cable and spun it by hand and the gauge seems to work. looks like it is on the tranny side any way to fix this?

hmmm - need more details.

If you jack up the rear end and turn the rear wheels with the car in gear, does the cable rotate?

Tom

Easier to undo the cable at the gauge and let it hang. Then just look at it while the car is rolling to see if it turns. If it does, your cable may be too short...

But wear long pants when you do this -- especially if you have hairy legs. Voice of experience.

Sounds like you have the wrong speedo.
The TR3 should have a Jaeger speedo which has a tendency over time to seize the 2 odo eccentric shafts then strip the fiber gears. This will not make it quit but odos won't work.

Car is a tr6 not a tr3 after installing the new cable at the speedo I spun the cable by hand and the speedo needle worked I then inserted the other end to the tranny went for a drive and nothing...

aha! so you know the connection at the speedometer is probably ok.

So if you disconnect it from the speedometer, and turn the rear wheels ... does the cable rotate?

Tom

Or, for a static test, when the cable is disconnected from the speedo can you turn the inner cable? You will not be able to if the cable is engaged in the gearbox drive.

You may even find that it turns a bit but then pushes in and turns no more... which would indicate you just engaged the cable.
