Hello, I have an all original 1971 TR6 that has been in our family since 1973. The car has just over 60k miles. The speedo has a tendency to jump around alot. Cable is fine. I'm told that this is fairly common. Does anyone know of a qualified source to fix/rebuild the speedo? Is it something I could attempt? Many thanks, Steve

I used Mo-Ma since I live in Albuquerque. Cost me about $135 for a complete speedo rebuild and a completely new speedo cable (6ft) custom made to match the GM transmission I was installing (V8 conversion) and the TR. No one else in town wanted to touch my project. You gotta see their place to know they are serious about what they do - and honest! On eBay they call it A++++ transaction.
There are other places out there. Regardless, your speedo can be fixed up for the next 30 years.

how do you know the cable is fine?, in my experience, if the needle jumps about the cable is the cause. A rough check is to remove the inner and lay it on a flat surface in a 'U' shape. Twist one end and it should rotate smoothly without lifting anywhere along its length. If it it does it is probably good.

I just got mine back from Nisonger in New York. They did a fine job, looks and works like new. I am sure there are others.

I agree with piman. Needle bounce is normally the cable.
Actually it's pretty simple to pull the cable, grease it up real good and put it back to find out.
It is possible for dirt or something inside the speedo to cause the needle to act irratic,...but 9 out of 10 times it's the cable needing lubrication.

Actually, Nisonger sent my speedo back the first time and the odometer worked only two miles and broke AND the needle jumped around alot at speed (did that before I sent it in for the rebuild). When they re-fixed it (no cost of course), the odometer works perfectly and the needle is bounceless. Are the needles in these cars supposed to "jump"? Think not. And, you are correct that the cable should be nice and slippery.
