Well, there I was enjoying a very fine brisk drive on a Healey-type road and after about ten miles of driving the speedometer quit... You may recall that recently I replaced the speedo cable with some difficulty - had to lightly file the cable down to get it to engage the speedo drive. I pulled over and checked to see if the cable is still rotating - it is. So, it is either the cable/speedo interface or the speedo itself. I noticed a small bit of black "soot" on the end of the speedo cable. Methinks something is amiss here. I haven't had a chance to take the speedo out of the car and try to inspect it in any way yet. Any ideas?

I am thinking, Bob, that I must have made it a bit too small...I sure didn't think I did at the time, but I havent' been able to get in there and investigate. As I am working essentially two jobs at once (since June last year) and have a fairly high maintenance wife (lovely, wonderful woman but she doesnt' like me out in the garage fiddling around all the time - would much rather have US out shopping, dining, etc....)I am either tired or 'busy'. But, that is my guess - it has probably 'rounded out' the speedo connector part.
So, my next question is this: Can you change out a speedo cable on a BJ8 without taking the tranny cover off? In other words, can you get to the cable tranny connector from below? I really hate having to take the tranny cover off again...

If it's only the inner cable that needs to be replaced, you should be able to disconnect the outer cable housing from the speedo, pull the inner cable out, and slide a new one into the outer housing. A little rotation of the cable will seat it in the trans. Reconnect to the head and let her rip.
