Speedo opereation

1979 MGB.

Years ago, my speedo began operating eratically. The odo turned, probably with some error. Eventually, all operation ceased.

The car has over 300,000 miles (well, some parts do, some don't). The trans mission has been reworked in the past, but I believe I still have the original (reworked, but not replaced).

Recently, I decided to fix the speedo problem. Hoping that it was not the gauge itself, I replaced the drive cable core and left the gauge end disconnected sticking out from under the dash - it did not turn as I drove. I would guess that the problem lies in either the transmission adapter or the pinion gear. Does anyone have any thoughts on this problem?

I would expect that the plastic gear in the tranny has given up. It can be removed from under the car and replaced rather easly.

Pull what you have and check it, someone must have an extra from an old tranny. Yep, is plastic.

Could be the angle drive as well. I would pull that first and see if its working correctly. If its the internal pinion drain the oil first before removing it otherwise your in for an oilly suprise but it's an easy swap.
