The odometer stopped functioning shortly after I got the car ....I also noticed the speedometer doesn't clock correctly. My GPS unit is showing that the speedo is showing 12-> 15km an hr slower then it should be At 125 km/hr it's really doing 110...Yet at slower speeds it's not that badly out of calibration.The needle also wavers at higher speeds, as opposed to staying constant at the speed marking. Then yesterday the trip counter froze.I still can't find the trip reset button....Sigh....So I basically use my GPS/tach when on the highway to know my speed.
What would be the correct process to determine what needs replacing?

Great article! Check out pg 6. On a more simple note, do you have larger tires on the car? That would cause it to read low and get progressively worse as speed is increased. Rear end gears would do the same. As far as wavering, I'd say the cable is a bit dry.

Or you can just send your speedo off to West Valley and they'll calibrate the whole thing for you.......and rebuild your cable to spec. I'm of the opinion that most after market cabels are doing more damage than good. Check out what they should measure for our speedos at the link in the next sentence. My speedo and cable were way out of spec after going the 5 speed and Nissan diff route and they brought it back to perfect.......I love going through those street radar signs that tell you your speed! Spot on! :driving:
 
Well I'll start with the greasing the cable...that I can handle lol...I read the article and I think it is beyond my large shaky meat hooks-for-hands....I'll send it off to West Valley when I put her away this fall....ok...before the first snowfall.....Decemberish....he he....
 
Stan: Be careful when lubricating the cable. Too much grease is a no no and it can eventually end up in your speedometer where it will gum up the works. Personally I like to use the dry graphite lube sold for lubricating locks - but not too much.
