Speedo ignition light

Anyone know whether or not the 100-6 speedo and tachs are supposed to have the amber plastic over the ignition/high beam lights?

Is the amber plastic piece just missing in the second photo, or did some come without?

Not sure about the 100-6, but after some research I determine the early 3000 came with red plastic inserts on both the ignition and high beam indicator lights. I think later, maybe BJ7 or 8, the high beam inserts were blue.

On most Healeys I've seen, the colored disk is missing on both the tach and speedometer. Over time either the disk shrinks or the glue holding it in the bezel dries out and the disk falls out and into the bottom of the canister. I'm not sure which.
When working on several old instruments, I've found the bezel empty but the plastic disk was loose in the canister.

With ROB, over time I have had to reattach the little red plastic covers over the lamps in these instruments.

Good replacement lens - red soft plastic lid from a coffee can or the like. Use a leather hole punch tool and try a few sizes. Very slightly oversize squeezes in.

I have the blue plastic for my high beams, but the amber one for the charge warning light is missing.

Bob - thanks for the note - great idea. Right now my speedo wags back and forth at about 20 mph max with spurts to the end when it gets onry. I'm thinking of opening up and checking it out, might pick up a coffee lid and get that red amber glow again.

It's more likely a kink in the cable than in the speedo.

John, about the only way to know if original is to have been the original owner. Other than that, it's hard to know.

It's more likely a kink in the cable than in the speedo.

This could mean the cable is fraying. 10+ years ago Moss had cables which were wound the wrong direction and I had one fail on me a year or less after installing it.

I own a BJ7 and wondered about the plastic lenses as I do not have any.

On the subject of a waggling speedo, almost definitely the cable is at fault. Changed both speedo and rev counter cables on my old girl and they work perfectly now.
