FYI I had my speedo fixed and it went out in 30 miles. The shop had me send the cable in with the speedo and as they suspected it was 1/16 too long. They said it is a common after-market cable problem. The extra length pushes the magnet forward and it sticks to the fly wheel in the speedo. They shortened my cable and repaired the unit at no charge. Now I'm happy. But watch the replacement cables. I was told it can also cause damage to the angle unit at the gear box which is more expensive to replace.

I just purchased an aftermarket cable. My speedo jumps around +/- 30mph. Tried moving the old cable around under the dash while underway, helps alittle but still jumpy. Thought a new cable would fix this. But after reading your post, now I'm scared to replace it. Is there any way to measure. Or should I compare it to the length of the old one. Or just whack 1/16" off the new one regardless? Speedometer works, but the odometer is INOP, any advice there is welcome.

My technical source shows that the inner cable should project out of the housing no more than 3/8" as measured from tip of the inner cable to the front of the large diameter flange.

I just had a thought. Try not tightening the cable's nut on the back of the speedo by a couple of turns and see if the needle doesn't smooth out
