Does the speedometer cable go above the bell-housing on its trip to the tranny or below the housing?

It runs above. For an overdrive it actually mounts on the bulkhead shelf just in front of the battery - there is a p clip that holds it in place. I snapped a picture of an example:

Thanks Randy, I looked on my bulkhead and saw no hole in the proper area but then remembered this was a no overdrive car when I bought it, so I'll pop a hole in there and move on.
I noticed that you put your Girling sticker on the battery side of the reservoir can. Most of the ones I see are on the front or W/W side which doesn't match with whats inside. I just rebuilt mine (for the third time, grrrrrrr) so if this fix takes and it doesn't leak I'm going to put the sticker where it most resembles what is inside the can.

Dick - The original "P" clip that came with my 1958 TR3A new is still there. It is brass with a top and bottom plate. It is held as in the previous photo with a sheetmetal screw with a straight slot.

As for the Girling label, there are arrows or words that indicate which pipe outlet is for the "Clutch" or for the "Brakes" and you sort-of have to line up the decal as per where the pipes are located. It's possible to rotate the reservoir so you can see the decal from any position.

Don't know what those snaps are either Don!

My cars don't have snaps in that area, just nuts where the support for the steering column (under the scuttle) is bolted to the bulkhead.

Possibly you are referring to the protruding ends of the steering column support studs. See photo below, which is from plate AN - drawn for a right-hand drive car.

Ah, they were so cleaned up they looked like snaps to me too. The shot is one I took of a local club members car - restored about 10 years ago and close to 100K in cross country miles just like Don Elliot - and still great looking car too.

Interesting...My 1970 (TS72XXX L) NO "O" also had that P clip installed...Painted over by a PO who decided it was easier to paint the engine bay black than to try to clean it up. This was 20 years ago & I could not figure what it was for so I filled it in after bead blasting & before respray. When I had the $$ later I installed an OD unit but couldn't get a consensus on the OD speedo cable routing.
No one even mentioned the cross-scuttle routing. Although my 3A is far from stock or Concours, I think I've got a new project!!
