Speed O

Two knurl nuts, the cable, and a couple of lights that just push in. Should be an easy 1/2 hour project.
But now you'll have an incorrect odo. (horror of horrors) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi, thanks for your input.
I think I have the correct one for the vehicel because I got it off an 1974 "B" used. It has 25,000 on it. At least I hope it is the correct one. The thing is how do I get at the back of it to loosen the screws? It seems that I will have to drop the stearing column to get to it.

Don't forget to undo the tripometer cable, also if your car is the type with the plastic box mounted on the fire wall, like my 76B, I found it easier to undo the speedo cable from this box, it gives you a little more play in the cable when screwing it back into the speedo, also while your at it, try replacing your dash bulb with a radio shack bulb, I can't remember the exact number, I think it was something like a 14 volt 2 miliamp??? they are about twice as bright as oem, you can actualy see the instruments at night!! Take the oem bulb with ya and I'm sure they can help ya out. Good luck MACK

Thanks for the advice. I need to trouble shoot the dash light circuit while I have the speed O out. None of the dash lights works. Thank goodness for flash lights.
Jerry

Hey Jerry, don't know how long you've been messing with the prince of darkness? But try the simple stuff first, bulbs, fuses etc. Good luck, MACK

First thing I'd look at for the dash lights, aside from the simple stuff stated above, is that piece of junk rheostat (aka the dash light dimmer knob)
If it makes crunchy noises or feels rough as you turn it chances are it has bit the dust.
These things seem to be a weak point in that circuit.
Being that they're all out it's not likly to be all of the bulbs. And seeing as how the whole car uses 4 fuses, if the only circuit affected is the dash lights, then that's not it.
good luck Guv'na

Those dash lights are so dim, when my rheostat gave up the ghost I just connected the wires together so whenever the regular lights are on so are the dash lights. Besides changing the rheostat requires double jointed fingers nine inches long. Bob

hehee. As it happens, Bob, I *have* a set of fingers like that! Workin' on Lotus cars for the last thirty-odd years has produced a condition my friends call "Lotus Fingers." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Those rheostats were fitted after BL got into the game... hateful things. The older Lucas ones (can't believe I'm gonna SAY this!) were rock reliable by comparison. Same with those *&^%#$ self annihilating rocker switches. Redesign/retool for the sake of "safety" in a time when money's tight. ACK! How big a hole would a toggle switch make in a shunt, compared to some of the other bits available for impacting anyhow? Reliability "gone fer a chop."

Bob, guess I will try to find the problem with the dash lights this weekend. It is an easy circuit to trouble shoot. The problem is, getting at it. Some one said Lucas invented the short.
