Speaking of Porsches [again]

[ QUOTE ]
Bret, try to stay as objective as you can on this one. Early 928's should be very reasonably priced - Sports Car Market lists all 78-82 928's at < $8000 for v. good condition. That seems low to me but not by much. There isn't likely any appreciation for cars like this, either.

Actually I’m not really looking for an investment or at least it’s not on my list of items of major importance to me. Honestly I’m one of those folks that thinks you are kidding yourself if you go into a vehicle purchase with the intent to make money.

What I’m really looking for is a performance GT that is sharp looking & think the 928 is one of the vehicles that fit the bill. But should they see a jump in value sometime down the road, keeping it in pretty much stock trim (as I plan to) – wouldn’t detract at all.

While I’m aware that the early 4.5L V8s will never bring as much as the later 5.0L or even a GTS. But after the past few weeks & months of researching front engine Porsches, I feel that they are somewhat unfairly undervalued, just because they don’t have an air cooled engine in the rear.

Despite the fact that the 928 was developed in house and was actually produced in the same factory side by side with 911’s, it is still shunned by many purists.

Perhaps that’s what has drawn me to them. I am quite familiar with that same sort of intolerance & bias directed towards those horrible looking Rubber Bumper Bs (like mine) and yet today we see them selling for upwards of $10K or more. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

As for cost of ownership? Well I think I’d be safe in saying that they ain’t cheap to care for and even less so to fix something when it breaks – but then what Porsche is?

Bret, I hope you have deep pockets. Porsche parts (even the aftermarket) are seriously expensive bits.

Personally, I'd rather have a sharknose M6/635CSi.

Never said I expected prices would be cheap (I know they ain't), but I hope you ain't trying to say an M6 or a 635CSi are "cheap" to maintain?

AHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, now there's a car!

Several years ago, I passed up an 850i for a 240SX... mostly because of insurance and maintanence costs - they were both for sale at the same lot for $10,000. The 850i was very pretty, but the cost of keeping up the v-12 scared the crap out of me... so did the insurance quote that was twice the monthly car payment.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif But I like that little dip the driver window takes when you open & close the door - just enough that it stays outside the weatherstripping.
