Dropped by a cool outfitter's shop that has been in business for a long time. You know the kind, they handle Patagonia and North Face clothes, high end outfitters and cool looking sales clerks. The young salesman asked if he could help me whereupon he commented, "My! You are wearing Birkenstocks. Haven't seen those around in a while." Young whippersnapper. Little did he know I bought that same pair in his shop years before. Prolly before he was born.

Oh, and guess what year this might have been. The road in front of my Grandfather's house wasn't even paved back then.

Hint. Not long after WWII.

Did he live on the right or wrong side of the tracks (water tank for steam engines in the back ground).

Actually, 1950. I remember the water tank. Oakdale, LA, was the end of the line for Santa Fe Railroad. It went west from there.

didn't know they sold Birks that long ago, were you on your way to get them?

Been wearing Birks since the 60's. Even tried Anna Kalso's Earth Shoes back then. Have had prolly 15 pairs of Birks since the early 60's. Yes, I was once a hippie. At least enjoyed the free love back then. Now, it costs.................

I wore Earth Shoes from 1972 through about 1978. Negative heal. I loved them.
