Spark Plugs - Champion or NGK

Hello to all -

I'm having a hard time deciding which plugs to go with. I've been using NGK-BP6ES's up till now with totally fine performance results. I just received from Moss Motors the Champion N9YC's (I believe the "C" stands for Copper) as they are the Copper Plus plugs. Am I splitting hairs here or is one plug so much better than the other?

Thanks in advance for all advice and thoughts on this matter.

I like Bosch Platinum-4 in my 3A. They run better longer than the NGKs I had used. The NGKs would foul quickly during a rich start and not clean up after running. The Bosch have been perfect for a couple of years now.

It came with Champions and the color was good when I changed them to NGKs. Now my spare set.

In photos I have seen of the Bosch Platinum-4, they look like they have too much reach for the TR3? Have you found this to be a problem? Also, what is the heat range as compared to the Champion L87YC provided by Moss -- hotter, cooler, or about the same?
 
I am running Bosch Platinum Plus 4032 shown next to a used NGK BP6HS. hth. Pete

Edit : they run a nice turkey-turd brown, no fouling or too lean. Engine is stock.

Many thanks. I'll do some research on them.

Edit: I looked up the Bosch Platinum Plus 4032 and found that it is a WR7BP, which indicates that it is a 12mm plug. I was under the impression that the 58 TR3 takes a 14mm plug. Am I missing something here?

Same here, for over 40 now.

<span style="font-weight: bold">bnw</span>, I tend to go along with you (for no reason other than I always figured that the folks who designed this stuff knew a lot more about it than I'll ever know). Trouble is, with the Herald, Lodge CNY plugs are difficult to find. ;-) Fortunately, Champion L87Ys are also recommended there.

My old GT6+ was actually very happy with its alternatively recommended AC 44XLS plugs!
 
Working in a Volvo store years ago I couldn't get a decent spark pattern on the scope (yes, we used oscilloscopes at one time) with customer installed new Champions. I eventually cleaned it up, and the idle too, with the proper Bosch plugs. I jumped from that store to a Chrysler dealership and did all the driveability stuff for 15 years. The Chryslers definitely performed best on the Champions they were built around. First thing I would do is get the "wrong" plugs out and get the factory ones in.
 
At my buddy's shop we had more than one instance where the owner put new Bosch Platinum plugs in his chevy and had a bad miss...

We would swap the plus for the O.E. style and the miss would be gone...
 
I've tried the Bosch and I went back to the Champions, due to a low speed miss. It always seemed that the AC plugs worked best in GM cars years ago and Autolite in Ford and Champion in Chrysler. But that's a very general and broad statement.
 
A reputable LBC restoration shop near here, Gassman Automotive, swears by Champions for these cars. Mike Gassman says Champions seem to handle these "dirty" (e.g., not fuel-injected) engines much better than most other plugs.

Mine had NGKs in it, I changed them to Champion after a visit to Gassman's. Can't tell the diff, but these plugs do seem to be a little cleaner than the NGKs.

I made a mistake when I posted above. I never tried Bosch. Mine were NGK BP6S? At any rate, I went back to Champion.
