Spark Plug Preference

I have been using a Champion RN9YC in my 74 1275 Midget. Is this the best plug? I know that spark plug technology has improved over the last thirty years. Is there a "hotter" plug? What are you guys using?

Nothing wrong with Champions, but I alway used NGK, stock plug for a Midget would be BP6ES or BPR6ES if you need a resistor plug.

Thanks. The quality of the last Champions I bought left something to be desired. Maybe a store handling issue.

I agree with Hap.

Never had a problem with an NGK, or Nippondenso. Don't remember any problems with Autolite either,

Have had problems with AC, Champions, Bosch(especially the platinum, even bought the expensive gapper for the platinums).

I recommend the NGK's..

Been installing, removing, diagnosing misfires, tuning, modifying plugs since 1963... Anyone remember the Blue Crown spark plugs???

I have an old school British car mechanic doing some work on my Midget for me and the first thing he did was pull by Bosch Plugs out which had 2 miles on them and put in the standard NGK. I couldnt understand why he removed these plugs that are supposed to be engineered for better performance and operation. He went into great detail about how the "new" technology doesnt always work well with the "old". Newer cars and trucks he said "no problem" with the newer generation plugs, but the older cars and more so the Midgets, you can actually create problems or put a band aid over issues you have by using the newer style plugs. Honestly, I have yet to pickup the car and want to get back in his head on this subject as he told me so many reasons why (that made sense) yet I cant remember everything exactly and dont want to give false info. I should have the car early next week and have more to offer on the issue of plugs.

yeppers i had problems with bosh platinums
dropped in some normal champions and it ran better

I've posted this in other forums but since it came up:

Plats work GREAT in the Alfas, foul in no time in the MGs. Champs run forever in the MG engines and foul in what seems like minutes in Alfas. NGKs don't seem to care WHAT car they're in.

For the Plat plugs to work well they need to be hit with an HEI system, best in fuel management vehicles. Standard 'trode ones like Champion or NGK will have a nice wide area for the spark to discharge. Go for the "not so special" tried-and-true.

NGK all day. Use thousands every year. To be quite hoonest I use toms 'O' Autolites too. They work okay, but definatally see more failures there. Wont use nothing but NGK if theres one available. FYI most Auto Store out here dont have the bp6es-bp8es plugs in stock. Most Motorcycle shops will have them on the shelf though!

Scott;
Those NGK plugs were very common in Hondas.
Try a dealership for inventory. You just may find a good source.

Put my vote in for NGK's. I raced 2 stroke japanese bikes in my youth and that sold me on NGK. Once tested low mile Champions, AC, and NGK plugs at a local mechanic's. The only one's that tested all good were the NGK's.
