In the 60's I had a spark plug pliers for setting the plug gap. It made them the same gap and made sure the electrode surfaces were parallel making a more even gap. I, at least seemed to, noticed a smoother running engine.

Well, I lost it and have been looking for one for a long time. Finally got one on Ebay last night.
 
Don't think they are even being made any more. You will plug gauges of the wheel type where you insert them into the gap, then turn it to open the gap. Has little slots that you put around the outer post and bend down to the ground terminal.

Reason why? The manufacturers were getting a lot of negative feed back from shop owners about comebacks. Seems that customers cars plugs would break soon after a "tune-up". The tool manufacturers researched and found the technicians would squeeze the tool so hard it would fracture the insulation around the center terminal..
 
I tried to find it for you, but the Snap-On site is down for maintenance. (Sunday night.) I have the exact same tool and I got it from them. It's great! Try looking in the Snap-On Tools catalog.

I got them last week. Looking forward to using them now.
When I last used a set I first opened the gap wider than I wanted the set to be. Then placed the plug in and squeezed the pliers. I was always amazed how nice and uniform of a job the pliers did. The electrode was flat to the center electrode front to back and side to side. Not cocked like they are when just bending them does.
