TR2/3/3A Spare tire hold down system, TR3, post 60000

Is there some sort of spare tire hold down system for the TR3?
I see a hole in the spare tire well but found no mention in the manual or any of the parts catalogs.

Thank you for your thoughts, Tinkerman

Aloha,

The hold down system consists of a leather strap in two pieces. One is mounted in the center of the spare tire compartment at the rear on the bottom and the other at the top. They buckle together like a belt. There are two metal brackets that are held in place by machine screws that secure the straps in place. Here is a link to the page in the Moss Motors catalog:

https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29158

The part number is 802-845 (items# 55). The other usual parts supplier most likely also have the parts also.

There is also another strap to hold the jack and tool roll in place that mounts to the right hand side of the compartment.

Thanks to both of you. Not only did I know that, but have the parts to make it happen, cheeeeshhhhh, some days I'm just not here!

You will never need them. There is nowhere for the wheel with tire to go, once the spare wheel well door is secured. Newer tires won't even slide easily with the door off. You may want them for originality, but no VTR or TRA judge has ever required me or any other sidescreen TR owner to open his spare wheel well in 18 years. They don't judge the inside.

Thanks, Don. If I remember correctly the judges can't even touch the car. I saw a hold down bolt and clamp on ebay and thats what got me going. Kinda embarrased me cause I like to think that I know the car and parts real well. Oh well I need to get my socks pulled down once in awhile, heh.

Tinkerman the embarassed.

I'm going to respectfully disagree, at least for the later bodies. The spare tire well was enlarged, and unless the tire you have fits pretty snug, it can bang around in there enough to do some damage.

I converted to a "compact spare" tire because I was tired of the spare being so hard to get in and out of my early body; it banged around so much (during admittedly exuberant driving) that it sprung the door off it's latches and out onto the pavement.

The post 60k bodies do have a larger spare tire well. The floor in the trunk was raised about 3/8" to accomodate a 165 tire as opposed the the earlier 155. However, that 165 is still a snug fit. I have to pull hard and wiggle it around to get it out.

I plan on using 185's, but I'll have to retain a 165 for the spare. Sort of like a large donut spare on a wire wheel.

I used to think that until I spun the front of the car into a wall. The spare tyre must have hit the front of the spare wheel compartment and then bounced back, popping the cover off, which the car behind ran over! I now have a leather strap!
