Spare fuel Pump

Am looking into putting a spare fuel pump into the "to carry bin"
A couple are the facet - a USA made one, and a fedtro - one made in a country to the north of us, looks like a facet clone.
The facet group has several, a cube, a black plastic, and a tube type
Any other types and suggestions welcomed, as always
 
I installed the facet in my car in series with the SU and hooked them up to a single pole double throw switch. Now just a flip of the switch and the other fuel pump does the job. I don't have to try to install the spare pump on the side of the road or in the mud! I have done the same on all of my LBC's. Have a good day!

John, I was thinking of doing that also.
I too have spare parts bin in the boot, but some things like a back up fuel pump can be installed. So I'd rather take the time to do it now, rather than on the side of the road.

Could you tell us the model number of the facet unit you have and where you purchased it from.
Photos of where you installed it would help too.

My project are to place IN SERIES to the LUCAS
PUMP one FACET PUMP 18 gal/h- with FUEL FILTER
I chose the steel type well know for strong service-to place on the opposite side of the LUCAS PUMP
on a little sub chassis there are also one switch
LUCAS/STOP/FACET(on the photos you see only the contacts)
on the wire that arrive from harness VIA
one blade fuse 10A, with RED LED indicator if burned
that you can see on the UPPER side
sub chassis Switch+fuse are accessible directly under
the RIGHT rear seater

I mounted two of the tube type with a switch in the car which will power either of them. I have had the little facet cube die on me after 5000 miles. Replacing it on the side of the road is not safe. You would be working under the car with no more than a tire jack holding the car up.

Hi Zblu,

If I were to install an additional pump, I would install the second in series with the Lucas as John mentioned. I would place the second pump on the frame within the engine compartment with a local activation switched also wired in series so that it is covered by my present turn-over breaker and pump fuse.

However, having visited this a little while back, Keoke was correct in questioning why, when my last Lucas failure was over 20 years ago. In stead, I have replaced the points in my old Lucas and updated the unit with the transistor modifications described by David DuBois. As a just-in-case, I also transistorized an old shelf Lucas body that can be stored in the boot and used in case of failure. Although I agree with Jerry that working on the car at the side of the road can be dangerous, exchanging only the body (which include points and diaphragm) would diminish the exchange to the extraction and reinstallation of 8 screws and the reconnection of power and ground (no disconnection of fuel lines).

Thanks all for the replies, have done a little research, and it appears that the cube facet has been superceded by the facet posi-flo, any experiences with these?
 
I have not done this yet, but when I do, the Facet will be under the hood and installed in the rubber portion of the line prior to the carbs. I'm not sure what kind of bracket I can make for this, but I'll figure it out. I have no interest in cutting my brand new stainless steel fuel line to install a back-up pump. My only purpose for the Facet is to serve as back-up in case my SU pump fails. Therefore, I don't mind that the Facet may have to strain a bit to pull the fuel all that way. Once I get the car home, the SU will be repaired or replaced and the Facet will go back to standby mode. Anytime I want, I'll be able to remove all the back-up parts and return the car to stock.
 
Since were all speculating here, why not install one of those "dual" SU types? That way you'll have two fuel pumps. I've heard they are pretty reliable. I've always wondered do you install a switch with those or do they both work all the time?
 
I had a dual pumper at one time Johnny and was told the pressures were too high, and that both pumps operated together hence rebuilt the original SU.
This was still prone to dropping out so I installed an electric box type ,lasted about 500 miles, so in went another type, still in.
Went to see what it was today (very slack of me to take this long) and what is there at the moment is a very compact looking tube type about 1.75" dia and about 3.5" long with an aluminium looking casing, nice install too, only a p clip with one bolt into frame with two wires to pump. Will go under car tomorrow to find out what it is, as I would like to have two of the same, makes change out easier - looks like a 10-15 min job from inside the car, however like Legal Bill points out its only to get you home, so an emergency spare is all I'm looking for

I don't know if you can buy them that way, but I have heard of people wiring the dual SUs up to be able to switch from one pump to the other or both, couldn't be that hard.

Would be kind of fun before a big trip or event to flip the ignition switch on

After a bit of tracking down it appears what is installed at present is a pierburg now to find out psi range
