sound problems

I am a new member starting a new activity (forums)
I have recently completed the restoration of a RHD TR5 and now want to make it a bit more civilised by upgrading the speakers.
The TR has some pioneer speakers (4 inch) in the kidney kicks just behind the central consol.
Any advice on what speakers to buy and where else speakers can be located to improve sound?
There is a firewall between the cabin and fuel tank therefore the back section is not an option.
Anyone ever installed speakers in the side kick panels without cutting metal?

Welcome to the forum, good to have someone who drives on the other side.

Here are two recent threads on the subject.

Can't help with stereo advice. I still have the original AM radio and speaker. I only get one station but with my new antenna hope to get another. cheers

many thanks for the kind welcome and the two strings you sent.
I am still hoping to find someone who has tried to install speakers into the front side kick panels of a TR4 TR4a TR5 TR250 or TR6 (all the same in that area)
And if they have managed which speakers were used and exactly were they installed the units. I have been to see two stereo specialists who totally contradict each other and I am just about to get the scissors and srewdriver myself but this will be a leap in the dark and could neccessitate a new set of blue carpets.

The enclosed speakers on the back shelf (first string) are a solution but one that takes up a lot of room and I am trying to avoid the cluttered look.

I picked up a 4A parts car that had existing speaker holes in the kick panels. They looked like factory cuts, but my 4 doesn't have them so not sure.

The speakers were in the 4A, and when I removed them, there was a piece of polyethylene placed over the hole and pushed into the space between the kick and and the wing before the speaker was inserted. This was to keep moisture off/out of the speaker cone, and leaks or drafts (draughts) out of the foot well.

Peel the carpet off of the kick panel and see if the holes are already there, or are pre-punched to be knocked out.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the BCF.

Thank you Jim. I have peeled back the carpet and board glued to the metal that makes up the kick panel and found some caveties very close to the A post. I presume these are the rectangular holes that you are refering to that had the plastic insert you mentioned?
I dont know whether there are speakers small enough to use these cavities but I shall certainly try.

I was told that most people put speakers in the corners just above the back shelf but I have installed a metal fire wall there and therefore that position will no longer work.
Anyway thank you again for looking at your 4A.

No idea what those holes are for, but not for speakers.

I just looked at my 4 (wings removed), and there is plenty of room for a 6" speaker, and maybe up to a shallow 8" between the kick and the wing. Center the speaker between the firewall and the front edge of the A post and you should be good to go.

Those rectangular holes are for access to the door hinges, I think.

Thank you to both Jims. I will let you know how I get on with the holes behind the kick panel and I think you are right that they are for access to the door hinges therefore I hope they are not full of door hinge when the door is shut. I have to check that....
Anyway thank you for the photo of the speakers in your car which I think is a GT6? Looks in really great condition and the speakers are very smart.Sadly I dont really have room for a similar set up in the TR5.
Best to you both

Sorry about that. I was looking at the other thread that Richard said to look at in his post. The GT6 was in that thread.

The firwall is to keep the petrol separate to the cockpit and is required for racing. I dont intend to race but it sounded like a very sensible idea and furthermore it is not visible.

Back to sound:
I was really interested to hear of tweeters being installed in the eyeball vents.

I wish I could work out how to attach pictures to this reply.

It may not seem very sophisticated, but I have gotten into the habit of fitting a medium sized speaker in eather side of the tunnel behind the seats. Just run the wires back from the carpet back to the speakers, there is plenty of room for a 6 x 9" but not really enough for it to move around much.

Sounf quality it pretty good, installation is simple as heck and comletely reversible, also had a 4A with boxx speakers mounted on brackets in the top of the footwells which worked pretty good too.

Thanks for the advice and I shall try to fit some in the top of the footwells tomorrow. If I cannot do that I will try to fit some smaller 4 inch speakes into the side kicks. If it is sucessful I will post.
