Sound a little pricey?

+1 on that.

If he can do everything I can imagine on a TR6 engine for $1200, I'll go into business refurbing them, with him doing the machine work. Line boring and cam bearings alone cost that.

If possible, take the engine to someone who KNOWS and is experienced with LBC (preferably Triumph) engines.

There's bound to be a skilled tech somewhere in your area with LBC experience.

Also, I have the Vizard Triumph book in pdf. format. I'll post it here if practicable (copyright problemos???).

Let me know, Mr. Moderator!

Nawww. That guy's out of the picture. Sorry if
something got lost, there.

I just had my engine done here in Seattle by an experienced TR6 rebuilder.
I took the engine to him with the head and oil pan off, the exhaust and intake off.
They did the disassembly, as he wanted to inspect as they took it apart, block boil out, magnafluxed the block to verify the same casting flaw, they ended up doing a .020 bore, had the crank mains and connecting rods throws reground, cam reground, head rebuilt with new springs, valves, hardened seats. They rebuilt the rocker assembly.
They bought all the new parts, bearings, oil pump, gasket sets , and reassembled the block.
They resurfaced the intake and exhaust manifolds also
This included balancing.
He also did the thrust bearing improvement mod.
This was 2350.00
I don't think your price is out of line
FWIW

Wanted to also add, 350.00 to assemble to short block.
If that includes, which it should, checking all the bearings to ensure they are not to tight. Putting the rings on and fitting, and installing the cam and timing chain and timing.
I think that is reasonable. How many hours will it take you and if you break a ring, very possible, or a bearing is to tight, whats the cost then?
What's his warranty if he does the assembly to short block, got to consider that also.
Unless you are dying to have all that fun! I love to wrench but I have other commitments also and there is plenty of other work to do that doesn't require specialized skills that the machinist has and I don't. They put them together for a living and I only did a car engine rebuild once in High School and we only had to do the crank, left the pistons in.

Albeit it was a healey, but when i redid my motor last yearit was about $500 for the machine work.

This included

boring and honing the cylinders

polishing the crank (it was not worn)

boiling out the block

planing the head and block (not shaving just to ensure good mating)

Redo the head (new seats, complete diassembly and reassembly)

new freeze plugs

measuring clearancs etc. to determine need for bearing sizes, etc.

Advice on re-assembly.

Not an LBC shop, but a local concientious guy recommended by a couple of friends.

Feel like I got a deal after reading this.

Don't necessarily think the $1700 is out of line, may be able to do better (or not) if you shop around.
