Sounds like a darn funeral...lol.

Everything is going fine with me and it's not a "fire sale" or anything like that. My home is on the market and as soon as it sells I want to be able to jet with no attachments. I have no idea where I may end up but it will be fun looking.

If it doesn't meet my reserve price I may just store it and save it for a rainy day.

With 7 hours to go the highest bid is only $6,600.00.

I have twice that much in the engine alone and wouldn't even consider such a ridiculous bid.

Looks like I may have to finish this one before I sell it.
 
Unfortunately you really can't consider a project like that a financial investment and expect a profit or even a break even. But good luck.

This is the norm, bailed projects do good to bring 25 cents on the dollar. I was building a 67 MGB GT rally car to run in the Mexican Pan AM Rally for a customer, I always had my doubts about the guy staying with the build to the end, and sure enough, he was fully paid up to me, but decided to pull the plug on the project, if he finsihed this car, with my labor, this would have easily been a $35K build, we were about $10K into, it, he got $2000 for the project. Tab, no one is going to appreciate the hard work you have done to this car like you would, so if there's a way you can keep the project and finish it, then I'd say go that route, because projects never get their full worth, and then there's the deal, that if you do finish it, then you may get 50 cents on the dollar, these cars are were never investments that pay in money .

Consider this a good example, Huffaker built what I would was the trickiest SCCA Bugeye race car the world has ever saw, it's cost a rumored to cost $88K to build, and 5 years later in near perfect condition, with spare race motors, ready to go, my buddy bought it for $25K, and we all thought that was high.

I watch Barrett Jackson and see some big Healey bring $80K, and everyone is wowed at the price it brought, when I know good and well that was a $125K professional restoration. Very few in the classic car hobby ever make a dime off their investment price. I'd be willing to say 95% of all cars sold at Barret Jaskson, RM, RL, etc. lose money over their restoration cost. Oh and race cars are the absolute worse.

I abandon like 3 car projects in my life, all of them race cars, and each time, I almost had to give them away. Brother I wish you all the luck in the world, thats a real nice piece you have, and maybe you beat the odds.
 
I've seen bids go nuts with only 2 minutes left to go, so I'm still cautiously optimistic. It's all a head game with the serious Ebay buyers so I'll just let them do their thing.

I really don't want to sell it at all and I won't if the current bidding is any indication.

When my house sells, I'm heading to Europe for a few months, and most likely will move there for an extended period of time. Schlepping an unfinished project around with me in Europe is not what I had in mind, so maybe I can find a decent place to store it until I settle somewhere.

For what it's worth, I will not take less than 20K for it and maybe not even that.
 
Tab, I sure as heck wish I was going to Europe for an extended period . . . not bad work if you can get it!

Regarding your TR, unfinished project like this one, with excellent parts/craftsmanship, should not lose value over the years. I wouldn't expect this car to depreciate much (from whatever it's current retail value is). If you don't sell now, it will probably sell later at a similar price.

Keep the darned thing, finish it when you have the resources.

And, enjoy Europe and the cheap currency exchange rate.

Let us know what's happening when you get there, we need a good european correspondent on here!

My uncle is coming over in Feb. He has a car dealership in Holland and many times he will buy cars here in the US and sell them in NL. If you don't sell the car and decide to stay in Europe don't over look the cost of shipping the project over. Classic cars are often exempt of road tax, and shipping from the US along with some other house hold items or another classic car might be a way to keep the project going. Also you will be near the UK so parts might be less expensive. But I have to think the car must have most of the required parts to finish.

Good luck in Europe, you'll have a great time over there. I'd sell up and move to England in a heartbeat if SHMBO gave the word.
 
Tab, here's an idea that "might" get you where you need to be. List your chassis/car in the DuPont Registry with a CRAZY price. The level to which you've taken your project will find some appeal there, imvho.

SOME times, when something is SO well done, as in your project, people figure there MUST be something wrong with it if the price seems too low, or "The ad must be fake..I mean look at that, it's GOT to be worth more."

I suspect your project might find a home through the DR. Worth a try maybe?

Tab the 20 grand price you said you may take is a total steel. TR4 lovers this is something you don't want to pass up. Anybody thinking of starting a TR4 restoration you won't see anything like this come by again. Good luck Tab on your new adventure, and the sale of the car.
 
Anybody know how the paint that was poured on the cylinder head was taken care of ? Some kind of sabotage as I recall.

I really think that the low bidding is due to the economy and is no real reflection on the car. Two years ago I think it would have easily sold for over 15k.

I have removed it from the market and decided to go ahead and finish the project. I was looking at everything last night and I'm sure I can have this car 99% finished by the end of next month. In hind sight, I'm glad it didn't sell. When it's completed I'm having it shipped to Europe and I'll drive it instead of a rental car on my escapade. How cool will it be to haul butt down the autobahn, or pay an entrance fee and take a couple of laps around The Ring? Maybe I can give Christian (Mad Marx) a run for his money. You hear that Christian...I'm calling you out amigo! LOL

I'm thinking of doing a website blog type of thing to record my journey, so it should be fun.
 
Oh, the old paint down the oil filler trick!

The paint and a few assorted nuts and bolts amounted to much ado about nothing. I removed the head, all the push rods, lifters, etc. and as it turned out, the paint never even made it past the one lifter it was poured in above. Zero paint made it to the sump, but I changed the oil anyway. The 4 or 5 nuts and bolts she dropped in never moved and stayed exactly where they were dropped. All in all, I think she may have poured less than 1/4 cup of paint into the engine.

Again guy's, I am not, nor have I ever been "upside down" in this car. Besides, I didn't buy the car as an "investment", only to have fun with. The good news is that my divorce may actually net me more than if I had stayed married!
