In our statehouse to be brought up is the use of a phone an offense to be pulled over for. Right now it is only a secondary offense.

My suggestion is to watch this on YouTube

Every kid with a cell phone needs to see this.

WOW! Very.... I see people talking and or texting all the time, looks like this should be a public service announcement for all ages.

Turns out they won't show this in the US as it is to bloody

I've often said that every time a student kills himself in a wreck because of street racing, drinking and driving, or I guess now this - they need to take the wreckage from the wreck site and put it on display in front of the school.

This stuff is serious and everybody needs to realize it.

True enough, "cause and effect", great teachers.

I teach 14 year olds who are all just getting their learning permits...just posted this on our class Facebook page. I hope parents don't get too upset but the graphic images may make them stop and think!!! Thanks!

I don't think kids learn anythign for that as I don't believe they think it can happen to them. I didn't at that age. "It could happen to an IDIOT, but not ME!!!"

I think that the best way to reach these kids is to
have someone about their own age who's caused a serious acc-
ident,etc.,talk to them at school.
If things are the same as back in my day, who'll tell
them wahatever they want you to hear, answer questions the way
they want you to - until you get your license, then you forget
almost everything.
Also, the parents who give the kid a high-performance
car for passing their license exam should have to install
cameras & a tracking/information monitor,without the kid's
knowledge. This might open up the parent's eyes.

It doesn't work.

On the day I graduated high school (in a large suburban school outside Pittsburgh, graduating class of 803 students), there was a terrible accident. 6 kids in a '73 Formula Firebird returning to a graduation party with more beer had a head-on collision with 7 kids leaving the same party in a '76 Olds Ninety-Eight. The Firebird was doing about 110 mph. 9 kids died, all 6 in the Firebird and the 3 in the front seat of the Olds. 2 of the 4 kids in the back seat of the Olds never walked again.

The scene was horrific, with bits of human remains embedded in what remained of the cars (don't ask for details). The Firebird was unidentifiable, and both engines were located well behind the front seats of their respective cars.

Both cars were put on display on a busy street in front of the body shop that was called to clear the wreckage. They stayed there until school began again in September.

6 more kids from my graduating class died in wrecks during that summer (one, a friend of mine. died with her father in a wreck where the 16 year old that killed them survived), with a total of 20 kids from my graduating class dying in wrecks before the next year was out.

All of them saw the Firebird and Ninety-Eight on display. It didn't help. :frown:

There is a lot more to "Distracted driving" than just cell phones!
We have all saw a bunch of it i`m sure.
1. People fussing with children while trying to maintain control of their vehicle.
2. Eating with one hand, driving with the other.
3. Putting makeup on.
4. Reading the morning paper or some other document while on their way to work.
Just to mention a few.
We too had wrecked vehicle displays on the lane leading into our high school parking lot in the mid 60`s, and NO it didn`t seem to prevent some of the kids from thinning themselves out of the gene pool in vehicle accidents.
I don`t care what other people do while driving, EXCEPT for the fact that it may involve me or my loved ones in their stupidity!
I say, if the police see someone acting stupidly while operating a vehicle they should act accordingly and issue citations, and hopefully the courts will fine the holy crap out of them!

They used to do this when I was in school. Of course that was in prehistoric times. A girl I knew in high school, hit a telephone pole sideways so hard, it killed her and a friend next to her in the car. The car was displayed a couple weeks later in front of the school. It remained there for about 8 months. I guess the do gooders today figure showing this would traumatize the children. Didn't hurt us none, made us think. PJ

High school age people are not adults, their PARENTS are supposed to be in charge and supervise all their activities, including driving. If the kid drives like an idiot and texts, yakks on cellphone while driving, his PARENTS should know or at least be aware and provide disciplinary action, including suspension of driving priveleges (or worse).

Don't pin the blame for kids' bad driving or bad behavior on teachers: most professional teachers are doing their best in a difficult situation. And after all, their influence is limited as they have practically no authority to discipline kids anymore for bad behavior. Instead, place responsibility on parents: it's our responsibility, as parents, to ensure that our kids to the right thing. This cannot be delegated, nor can it be ignored.

If I caught my kid texting while driving my car, he wouldn't drive it again for a long, loooong time, if ever. Period.

Parenting: vastly under-rated nowadays . . . :yesnod:

Nobody blamed teachers for anything.

Just saw a report on TV the other night and they say, most teen age accidents are caused by using cell phones and most of them are because of text messaging. According to the report, a lot more kids would be alive today if they didn't have them in the cars. Needless to say, it's not only kids who are at fault or who have accidents related to cell phones.

My next door neighbor in high school had a really nice 68-69 Firebird, 400 small block, nice car. Senior graduation, he and a friend went to grad party number 1. Spent some time there, enjoying the party and the drinks. Left party 1, went to party 2 - more drinks. Do NOT remember much after arriving at party 2. Do not remember how long they were there. Do not remember leaving party 2 and going to party 3. Same story at party 3 - more drinks. Do not remember leaving party 3 and do not remember the collision with the sizeable tree that destroyed the Firebird. Both survived the crash, the passenger was in a coma for a time. According to the parents of my neighbor, the only thing that saved them was that they were SO drunk they were totally relaxed on impact and didn't suffer the resulting injuries from bracing and stiffening for impact. There is still a major scar on that tree from the impact. I've never forgotten that - that was 1982.

I'm going to lock this thread now. I think we're all agreed that this is an important subject but we don't want it to get out of hand or poitical in any way. It isn't at present, but it could go down that road too easily.
