#1 Son just departed for a direct flight from Grand Forks, ND to Japan. This is only his second overseas flight as an AC on the KC-135R. He'll be over there supporting some sort of joint exercise for about a week and a half.

Hope he remembered his no-doze

No kidding! Usually they stop in Hawaii for a layover but I think he's dragging some fighters across the big pond.

An easy trip for him, Basil. Pity the poor fighter jocks. At least your son can get up to stretch his legs!! That's one loooonngg trip in a fighter cockpit! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Same as always. A "joint exercise". Practice. AKA Readiness.

And that trip IS a looong one. Gah. A bit of time in Japan would be sommat compensatory tho. ~If~ he gets any time to himself.

Crimeny, I wonder what we are up too now??

Noting new - these sorts of exercises occur all the time. It's called training and readiness.

Not only that but the aircraft go in and out of Depot maintance from time to time and rotation is necessary.

Basil - I'm off 2 Dec until 16 Dec to support "Yama Sakura" which is a major exercise where the Japanese Self Defense Force & their allies defend against an attack from a "neighboring country"....I'll be playing a notional US division artillery commander who is supporting them....he could be part of the Air Force roll-up before that exercise...we can't play on the ground like they can play in the air so we have to do it with computer simulations.

Reminds me of the joke...poorly related here.

A KC-135 is dragging a flight of F-16s on a long overwater mission. After a few hours, one of the fighter jocks decides to spice things up a bit, and pulls ahead of the tanker. He comes on the radio and says "hey tanker, watch this flying display" and proceeds to do a series of aerobatic manuvers before falling back into trail.

The tanker driver says "Ok, hotshot, watch this." For 20 minutes, the tanker drones on straight and level. The fighter jock finally comes on and says "Ok, I'm waiting." The tanker pilot replies..."Oh I already did it. Got up, went to the back of the plane, used the latrine, and stopped at the galley on the way back up and got me a fresh cup of coffee."

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif An "oldie but goodie" that!

"gas passers" and "lawn darts"... all in good fun. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

that is a good one! heheh

I ditto Doc's Japan statement. It's a seriously long haul. I got to ride in a 747 from LAX to Yakota AFB, and that was long. I can't imagine being cooped up in a plane even longer than that like yer son will be. However, assuming he gets some leave while over there it ought to be fun /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I'll tell you one thing: Korean Airlines & JAL don't like it when you get up & move aronud...they actually chase you out of the galley....Delta on the other hand...hehehe...stewardesses feed you & provide drinks while you're standing in the galley halfway over the ocean!

I took a direct flight from Newark, NJ to Hong Kong in February. The duration was 16 hours non-stop, so thge cheeks were a little painful from sitting all that time. The flight was full on the way there, so not even sitting sideways was possible, but on the way back a seat next to me was empty. That helped a lot (300 LBS and 6'4")

Basil, you sound like a proud father!

I got to fly on one from Clark to Okinawa. It wasn't until we were airborne that I learned it was way over due for scheduled overhaul and the only reason I caught the flight was due to engine failure.

My worst flight was from Travis to Clark. Not non-stop but you would not have know it. The flight was suppose to start at 6PM but was continually delayed in hour increments until 6AM. Drank a lot until the bars closed then just sat there. Once on board, lots of Marines with their weapons. One hour lay over in Hawaii which they let us off, then off to Guam. A two hour layover there but could not get off the plane. Sweated inside watch the rain. Then on to Clark, then a bus to Subic. 28 hours.

Your son will have a good time.

Basil is and should be a proud father.

I used to make the trip from Dover to SEA (usually Siagon or Da Nang) once a month as a loadmaster on a C-133 before I went PCS to Viet Nam. We had to make the trip in stages. Usually staged at Travis, Hickam and either Clark or Kadena. Loadmasters don,t usually have a lot to do during those long flights so I read and prepared my self for the crew rest. HEHEHEHEHEH

Basil tell your son thanks and thanks to any other active duty or veteran types.

Pete

I pro'lly did that Travis-Hickam-Clark-Saigon-Bangkok and back half a dozen times in four years... each trip seem'd longer than the last, too.

...come to think on it, the last one was for a year (PCS: Ubon)! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
