Something totally out of the blue!

Ok so I decided to take the B out to stretch her legs & treat my daughter Julia to a short drive after I picked her up at school this afternoon. Along the way I was pretty much minding my own business enjoying the ride and the sound of the burbling exhaust note. But while I was living in the moment - I’ve learned some time back that I need to remain ever attentive to my fellow drivers to make sure I acknowledge the occasional friendly waves or approving thumbs up. Wouldn't want them to think I was a snob now would we? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Anyway about half way to my daughters school I see a new GTO (06 or 07 I think because it had the air inlets on the hood) approaching from the other direction. Now I’m not a big fan of the newer Goats, but I am probably more aware of what that vehicle is I suspect, than most owners are. Anyway just as I was within about 50-60 the driver went out of his way to lean his head out the window and raise an his arm to give an approving thumbs up & a knowing node.

After acknowledging the guy & returning the thumps up, I got to thinking that the driver must’ve been an enthusiast on some level as I’d never been able to get the time of day out of a most new GTO owner under normal circumstances.

So the question is – have you ever been surprised by a friendly wave while driving you classic from a car or marquee that you wouldn’t normally expect one from???

The best to date still has to be the guy in the 64 Stingray that went out of his way to make sure that I knew he approved of my little British car & told me of the 76 B he’d owned as a collage student. I swear I was in total awe as his vet was totally immaculate and by my admittedly untrained eye seemed stunning on every level. She must’ve been worth at least $75K-$100K plus range.

Last weekend had 2 examples.

A young guy in a "bland-mobile" swung hard out of a gas station and suddenly slowed down and shouted out "nice" before heading off.

On a country road a new model Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder with the roof down came around a bend, slowed and the driver gave me a thumbs up.

Same trip out, I also saw a TR6 and a Spridget.

My next door neighbor has 2 Vettes (78 & 98), is a big Nascar fan and really likes the big Healeys.

I will always offer a "thumbs up" to a fellow LBCer, no matter what I am driving, (and at times that would surprise the LBCer thumbed)!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Hey Pat,

Well, its a mixed bag really. I’ve been to a few meetings and while we almost always acknowledge one another while driving down the road (kind of rare actually) the most thumbs up we get don’t come from our fellow P-car owners, but in fact come usually from all sorts of drivers. Never gotten even so much as a nod from Cayenne or Boxster owner.

Bout the only group of Porsche owners I’ve noticed who regularly give a thumbs up or a wave to 928s are usually from the owners of “older” P-cars (early 911’s & 914’s) and the occasional 924/944 crowd owners. Mainly because we’re sort of the red-headed step child of the marquee.

Frankly as far as German cars goes I think I get more acknowlegment from BMW owners than any of the others.

My B gets most of its recognition from women my mother's age, and from kids.

Always get nods and thumbs up. Last week I was on the highway doing about 60 and a plain jane pickup passed by. The guy looked, nodded and gave me a thumbs up. I've got them to think that the lookers are enthusiasts.

That what I thought when I had my early 911 for about two years (on the road), I do not recall one other Porsche ever waving, thumbs up etc.

I do recall the drooling BMWs hehehe.

Ya know the stupis bumper stickers "It's a Jeep thing, you woulden't understand"?
I know what it is now.
Drivers of Willys, CJs, YJs, TJs Or any of those other Js Wranglers always wave at each other.
It's cool. A lot like when I had the TR4A on the road.
But the only kind of comment's a get about the ol CJ are things like
"what holds that thing togeather?"
or "who let that on public roads?"
hehehehehe

I get this all of the time, wether I'm in the TR6,
Cortina MKII,or the MKIII.I had a guy in a nice,older Alfa
give me a wave of approvel. That always makes you feel good
when true enthusist acknowledge you.
The coolest one, though, was when they held a Healy
convention in Eureka,& John Sprintzle (spelling)was there.
As I drove my MKII Cortina GT away (admiring the Healeys),
he noticed it,& gave me the "thumbs up".That meant a lot!
