OK everyone, I live in Hornell NY, and own a 1977 MG Midget. I need someone close to me who could take my car for a drive and tell me what I need to make it drive and handle better. I'm sure I need front shocks because you can push on the front fender and it goes up and down fairly easy. For the motor, tranny and the rest, I need an expert or experinced mg owner to help. Thanks everyone, if you can help, please email me. Jerry

Hello Macker,
i wish i was closer to you, but i am 7 hours away. But the idea is great, i wish i knew how a new one was supposed to drive and handle.
You dont mention what is giving you thought that something might be wrong. A good inspection of all suspension parts may help you out , or find a mecanic friend to help you out.
For shocks try world wide auto out of madison wi. ask for Peter. lifetime guanteed.

and by the way maybe you could tell us a little about yourself and your car as away of introduction.

Hello, My name is Jerry and I just bought a 1977 MG Midget off of my brother. He just purchased a 1974 MGB in boxes. The rolling chasis was recently painted and the motor rebuilt. So now he is putting it all together and I'm working on getting my MG running smooth. He replaced all of the front suspension except for the shocks. The runs fine but it feels like it revs out quick. Sometimes I'm in 3rd or 4th driving around town. Sometimes the tack will drop to 0 and the car hesitates for a second then picks back up again. Almost like it wasn't getting gas or the points were not working. When I start out in 1st, sometimes it shutters or shimmies before it smooths out. Any help? Thanks, Jerry

macker..concentrate on ignition problems

I agree w/ Tony. Sounds like a tuneup is in order. As for reving out quickly, the 1500 mill is only redlined around 5500 rpm, way lower than most modern cars, and I seem to remember that it wasnt worthwhile to rev much beyond 4500-5000 rpm.

I also agree. Don’t overlook the basic tune up items. I am to embarrassed to admit how long I had acceleration and idle misfire problems before I figured out that I had a problem with the distributor cap. The car ran good above 2500 RPM and under mild accelration. The dist. and the wires looked great, but once while fiddling around by the dist. I got a few good shocks (that can't be good!). After a new cap and wires, I have a whole new car. I messed with carbs timing and points for way too long.

Ditto here too. The tach doing what it did in conjunction with the motor hesitating is a sign that it is ignition problems on the primary side of the coil. Points can also make the tach read irratic.
