How many cans of engine color paint is required.

I have all painted but the head and valve cover now. That includes transmission as well.

Have just about used one can and I bought two. So two cans do the job with lots left over for touch up.
 
I really don't know if its one of those urban legands, but are you supposed to paint a tranny? I've been told you're not, and can't remember who told me that. The very least, another topic for discussion.
 
Don't know if you're supposed to paint a tranny or not, but my Bugeye still has its original smooth case, painted that lovely pea-soup-BMC-green.
 
Bugeye transmissions are to be painted same as the engine. Some later stuff is not.

That is not only what the book says but I had one only three years old at one time.

So paint it is.
 
That is correct lovely pea soup color on the early ones.
 
I remembered who told me not to paint and asked I why not paint the tranny. He said that the aluminum actually has the ability to breath. Some were painted and some were not, but you lose a little cooling to your tranny. Since you aren't racing it might not be a problem, but it also could be. Yes different models were painted, but it really isn't the best thing to do.
 
Aluminum also often doesn't take paint as well as iron/steel. It's definitely true that the cooling effect is slightly reduced by painting the aluminum.
