Some Tech Advice Needed for Horn Brush on 59 Bugeye

All:

Today I attempted to install the steering wheel on my 59 BE. The wheel went on but when I tried to install the horn I found the horn brush sticks out too far. I contacted Moss and they told me the brush should be 2.6 inches long (uncompressed). This one is that length. I am hoping someone can explain to me what is going on and provide some installation guidance.

I am not familiar with the specifics of the B.E. However, the same brush design is used in several British cars which I have worked on. There are several lengths available.

While Moss told you the length to expect, they could still be wrong. There was some discussion about this several years ago. Take a read through the thread linked below.

I could be wildly off base on this but IIRC when I had that issue putting the brush in the other way - it worked.
 
I found that the Bugeye takes the shorter bush option. Sorry I don't have the length and my incorrect long version is buried some ware in in my parts bins. I think JPSmit is correct that you have the bushing in backwards, so that may fix your issue. If all else fails I will pull the one from my car and check the length.
 
Mike, as mentioned the round end goes toward the steering column. Yes, the brush I bought was also too long. I cut the hexagonal end of the brass rod off but I don't know how much anymore. Seems as if I cut a little off at a time--you want the spring to put pressure the little brass tab on the underside of the horn push button--mine is long enough that it will actually pop the button off (it is a shock when you are driving and this happens). Seems like it was 1/8" or so, but I really can't remember. I used an X-acto razor saw and it was quick and easy, and I got a pretty accurate cut. Charles
 
Thanks to everyone who have so far provided feedback - and I welcome more! I have put the brush in both ways and the result is the same - it is just too long. I will cut it today and give it a try. Replacement brushes cost $5 through Moss, so if I screw it up I can easily obtain a replacement. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Bugeyeguy.com has the brushes for sale already modified. He talks about the exact problem you're experiencing.

The one I purchased from MOSS #560-430 compresses more than yours. The uncompressed length looks to be the same. I have a feeling you may not always get the correct one when ordering from MOSS or others.

I cut it down and it fits fine, but I have another issue: The horn is always on. As soon as I hook up the battery the horn starts to go - with or without the brush/horn button installed. I guess it is a ground issue. Advice?

Yep. You've got the purple wire touching ground somewhere. Try disconnecting it under the dash at the steering column cowl first, and see if it's the ring in the cowl touching something. If you didn't have this problem before you started working in that area then you probably caused it somehow.
