Helly everyone,

I am new to this forum and also a rookie when it comes to car problems, but learning.

I own a MGB-76 which I bougth in UK last year ( I live in Belgium)

The problem I am facing today is related to heat build up.
Engine runs too hot. Temp indicator goes to max.
Just yesterday I found a pool of cooling water on the floor, which seems to come from the reservoir. The water is not showing presence of oil.
The engine has been revised ( engine block replaced by a professional) last year, and runs smooth otherwise.

Above may be a bit vague to pin point the reason, but some direction to look for would be great.

I agree check the thermostat. Also, are you sure the water/coolant pump is still good? One of those IR thermometers might come in handy to determine if the car is getting as hot as the temp guages says it is.
 
Well CULATER,welcome to the forum. Sounds like the thermostat isn't working properly. Like Rob said, check the water temp with a remote thermometer, just to make sure your gauges are working properly. I have used an old meat cooking thermometer. Leave the radiator cap off, (NEVER REMOVE A RAD CAP WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT)!Start the engine and let it warm up. Check the rad temp with the remote temp gauge. Usually if the thermostat is bad it will do one of two things, The engine will run too cold or way too hot. This is the easy and least costly route to check, if it isn't the thermostat, then you have a more costly problem. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif PJ

Welcome to this great forum... All of the above is sound advice... The pool of coolant does indicate a problem and more than likely the thermostat is not opening at the correct temp/pressure. You might also check the radiator cap. As you know, they are calibrated for a particular pressure and release when the pressure (due to temperature expansion of the coolant) exceeds the rated pressure. As advised by Paul161, make sure that the temp gauge is working properly, if so, first step will be to replace the thermostat. If the cap is faulty, you will loose coolant and temperature will rise as the coolant is pushed past the seal of the cap... If all of the above fails to mitigate the problem, then we have a new set of problems... Once again, Welcome... and good luck... Ron
