Hi
I am putting up a wire suspended shelf which is held in place with steel wires with swagged on balls on both ends.

The problem is I need to shorten the wires and then put some sort of new end onto the wires.

The ends need to hold a fairly large amount of weight (book shelves!) so whatever wire ends will need to be fairly strong. Any ideas? Unfortunately I don't have a swagging tool.

This is what I am installing:

my ideas were:
Solder some sort of brass sleeve on.
find some way to swage a sleeve on.
try melting the end with a welder to create a ball?

The wire is looks like basic multi-stranded steel wire.

Rent one?

I used melted lead to make cable rings to hang artwork from. Some pieces are pretty heavy.

Ohhh! Toxic art! Very edgy!!!

Go to a dive shop, they will make up a very strong, thin stainless cable for not a lot of money, with any stops you might want.

Nico press sleeves. You can get them at good hardware stores. You can use a vice to swage them with a drill bit to create the indents.

Ok, I couldn't find "real" Nico sleeves but I found pop rivets which had an internal diameter close to my wire, so I am taking them apart to use for sleeves.

I also bought a cheapy pliers which I ground off the edge and added a small rounded recess to make a swagger tool.

Since I couldn't pull it of I hope it will be strong enough!

The picture is 180kb. If a picture is less than 150kb it will show "inline" but if it is bigger (in file size) it shoes as an attachment.
