First the main computer went down, so I started using my old laptop to get my email and to hop on the forum. Now my laptop has crashed! big time. Iget the "Blue screen of death" when I fire it up.
So for now I'm stuck begging computer time from others to check in here.
It's like being in solitary confinement.
I'll try to check in. I just wanted to let the regulars know that I'm not mad or anything I just don't have any easy access for a while.
I'll be back soon!
 
If that puter don't come back "get a dell".
We're still here when you get back, and in traditional BCF fashion, if there's anything we can help with, call.
PS I do have a spare puter in the attic

I feel your pain, two of my Desktop P.C.`s also went south. I have spent more than a few days getting them back in useable order. {basically complete rebuilds on both} One was bad H.D. {boot sector nasty} and the other Puked a M.B. Hope yours isn`t anything real serious. Luckly I have several other options for getting on line here. Hope to see you back soon.
 
I feel your pain, about 2 weeks back our "family machine" went down 3 days before I bought my new laptop! I ended up posting at school whenever I could, while my parents got the offending device fixed, and also bought a new desktop. We have 3 working computers now. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
 
hmmm.... I have four or five units running here at any given time. Sometimes more. The GPU is as old as dirt but seems to be the machine I always revert to.

It's Linux on an old AMD 400 mHz board. Five or six years old. Never turned off as it's also the Samba server for the LAN here at Chaos & Mayhem Pty. Ltd... seems there's a need wot should be filled. BSOD is NOT a concern. Dell and M$ are not "Of the Force."

...and there's a device between the DSL modem and the LAN: a two NIC Linux box running Smoothwall. 121 days without a shutdown, that only for an IP renewal issue. Not due to any internal problems. Highly recommend y'all 'investigate' this stuff. No more challenge than LBC ownership, really.

Had the same problem with my tired old Latitude D600 a couple of weeks ago. I'd replace three HDs, a couple of keypads and the monitors. When I called this time Dell gold support ended up sending me a new D820 laptop. Nice but a bit heavier but I think the larger LCD monitor was a great trade off.

Kind of miffed but I like it. During our OROCLE (hate it btw!) start-up intro last week (change over set April 2nd) they told us that they're tired of Dell horrible product support and it looks like we're going over to HP laptops.

had both. hp was heavier, had less battery life, and lasted no longer. never used cs with either box though...

Had the 'xact same experience. Been through four laptops (and a 1/2 dozen desktops.)
 
cs - rtfm on legs.
our internal cs desk for example runs a script.
first question is always 'did you try rebooting'.

no - i have nothing better to do than call you...

Doc, what version of Linux are you running? What are it's limitations, if any? I've tried Ubuntu in my lap top and it seems primitive. Any clues? PJ

The latest (and 'friendliest' IMO) is the Fedora Core 6 release. That'd be my suggestion.

I've been seeing and hearing about CentOS a lot lately. I got to dabble a bit with and CentOS box recently. It seemed complete, had all the tools you would want or need, and if it didn't there's always the command line. It was pretty, not as pretty as Vista, but pretty none the less. Also, since CentOS is a Linux distro it's possible to really turn out the graphics on the desktop to blow Vista's prettiness back into kindergarten.

The only thing I couldn't do was get the CentOS box to communicate with the owner's Apple "Airport Extreme". I'm not sure why it wouldn't, but I also noticed that the stupid "Airport Extreme" was assigning IP values that were out of the designated IP range. For example, the Aiport Extreme do hickey was configured to use a Class C subnet IP range (i.e. 192.168.1.1 through 192.168.1.200), but it was assigning IPs that started with 68.x.x.x. GYaaah! whaddi start? Ok it's a week down the road and the simple "the computer is offline" turned into a total restoration! kinda
Since the computer was down it was time to make the move we've been planning. We got a gas fireplace insert last fall, and the only place it would fit was in the corner of the living room where the computer desk was. So we needed to move the desk, which meant I had to clean out the storage room to put the computer in there. That would be the storage room that hasent been cleaned since we moved in 9 years ago.
Well... a week later I've got the computer re-located, and the fireplace set in postiton, and now I'm back on line with the main unit. I've ran som anti-virus programs, and they've seemed to wipe out the issue...
here's hopeing!
