I would like to put some knock-off wheels on a special I am building,
But I do not want wire wheels ,
So are there any British cars that used solid rims with a knock-off hub ?

prefer 15 - 16 inch rims

thanks for your help

Twin Cam and Mark II Deluxe MGAs used knock-off pressed steel wheels. However they are extremely difficult to find, and are very expensive if you do manage to locate a set. I seem to recall a single wheel in average condition selling on eBay recently for around $400. A full set of nice wheels would easily fetch over $1K.

But Steve go get chromed out "fly" wheels with independent spinners and spend $8,000. Twin cam wheels are cheap-it"s finding good ones that's hard! Sorry could help myself.....when I'm next to a Lexus SUV and can see myself & the car in those shiny chrome 18's (?) it's kind of scary!!!!!!!Randi /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif I'm trying to forget I'm Old & just don't understand why that old lady is in my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

minilites are OK, but I need the look of early period correct rims

LOL @ Randi! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

I also just remembered that the twin-cam wheels were not splined. They use a knock-off to secure to the car but not splines. I heard rumor that one person has successfully mated splines to a steel MGA-style wheel by welding a wire wheel hub into the wheel and adding support gussets.

Hello Beaulieu,

what period are you refering to?, the Minilite style is 60's, if you want earlier and 15" look for jaguar (Dunlop) wheels. I believe that they are curently being re-manufactured but they are expensive. The style is similar to the MGA Twin Cam, or look at the Jaguar 'D' Type racing car.

I am looking for a steel wheel not a cast Minilite style wheel, I found a picture of the MGA TWINCAM wheels, something like that would do,
Any idea who sells the Jag wheel ? or a picture of one ?

just the inner stamping would be OK, I can get the outer rim here

thanks

The Jaguar D-Type wheels by Dunlop featured a spun aluminum center mated to a steel rim (or was it the other way round?). They are still being manufactured, since you see them on the better D-type replicas. These are peg-drive wheels, meaning they use a threaded hub to secure the wheel to the hub, but pegs to provide drive (if you look at a Dunlop wheel, it looks like it has five lug nuts). The nice thing is, no splines to wear out.

An even rarer type would be the Rudge knock-off disc wheels as found on certain Mercedes racing cars of the fifties, and were optional on the SL. These were a true splined knock off with ally rims. I have no idea if they're still being made, but knowing Mercedes, they probably are, at a price.

If you know of a wheel maker, a set of vented disc wheels in the appropriate size could conceiveably be fitted with splined centers.

I've been trying to re-find this thread for days! Check out Dave Bean Engineering . They’ve got some Lotus wheels for about $200 each. The rims are 13” but they might come bigger, worth a call.

I just looked into the Moss catalog and found the cast wheels (MGB catalog). They may have a source for steel wheels. Phone them and find out. There is a web site featuring steel wheels (KO) for Corvettes. Maybe they have ones to fit.
