Seems to be a lot of discussions on how good they are. I know their fast, but how do they hold up? How sensitive are they to power spikes? How much storage space? I understand a few of the new computers have very small HDs and use Cloud for storage. I don't want to do that. What are the pros and cons? PJ
 
I have a couple. First one I installed in Oct or Nov of 2012 and it is still as fast as when new. Zero issues. They are silent as well. PNY makes pretty fast drives that are inexpensive, I can't remember what brand I bought though. Read/write speeds should be at least 540MB/s.

In my Macbook pro, I happen to have a Hybrid drive that is discussed on the second page of the article. The main benefit I get with the Hybrid drive is much faster boot times and many programs that I use most often get stored in the flash memory and thus open and work faster than they did before.
 
The only thing I've experienced is SDDs are more expensive than magnetic platters. The Linux machine has been fired up multiple times daily for the last 2.5 years. I have the OS and my home folder on it. A traditional hard drive stores all my less used files and photos.
 
Thanks for the link! As I'm a "browser, photo, and word" type user, and dont' do heavy duty editing type work, I'll probably stick with the traditional hard drives for now. But will keep my eyes open as (I assume) the SSD replaces the HDD.
 
The main advantages of SSD are speed and reliability (no moving parts). If speed is not a concern and you keep important stuff backed up, a regular HD shoul be fine. That said, I suspect in a few years more and more computers will come with SSD standard and mechanical HDs will eventually go the way of 8-tracks.
