Just got off a conversation with a friend about his frustrations about his Gmail and trying to make Google Plus work, which will now apparently be forced on any Gmail users... If they push hard enough I just may have to leave Gmail, although I really don't want to, have had the same account for over five years and like to keep the same one active just for continuity sake, I'd lose so many contacts in the process...

Meantime over in Facebook land, the new timeline format is causing a ruckus, and more privacy issues, my usage of Facebook is rather minimal, mostly to hear about local events of interest, many of which only get posted to Facebook...

What's a guy to do... It seems like social media is pushing harder and harder for us to reveal our whole lives online, I for one will refuse to! :hammer: Most of my life is lived in real time, off-line, and I don't plan to change that...
 
Get your own domain name, and create an email address using it. That way you have total control, and it never changes. Online email services are for lemmings! :wink:

I use Gmail too - could someone point me to where it says I'll be forced to use Google Plus?

Don't have twitter, or facebook. I do have gmail and if <span style="text-decoration: underline">forced</span> to participate I will just drop the gmail.
 
Forced is not the right word. Google+ will be part of your Google accounts (similar to Gmail, Youtube, etc). You may elect to use it or not use it.

As to social media, I find the people who use it most have the least to say. People who are actually doing stuff, on the whole, don't have time for it.
 
Thanks for the clarification Jody. If it's part of gmail and I don't have to participate then that's fine. It will just be a dormant part of my gmail.
I have too many resumes outstanding with my gmail address so I don't want to close it.

Thanks Jody. I figured it would be an option, not a requirement. Also have to agree with you on the "use it most" comment. Not everyone of course, but it seems to be a trend.

OK - gotta run. Need to check what my 1500 FB friends had for breakfast.

I've got no use for it and aint NO bodygonna force ME to do NUTHIN'!

Worse thing you can do is try to force something on me, I ALWAYS find an alternative solution.
 
With the news last night talking about Facebook going public it was also noted that they're pushing their advertisers to only allow entry from Facebook accounts. Seems a number already will only allow logins if you can provide your Facebook logon.

I don't do social media, don't have that much to say, and most days am not that interesting. Guess I'll end up an internet hermit...
 
Actually, Facebook is similar to the Pub in my mind, except more people are involved from my past, and from circles besides LBC's. We discuss politics, family health, recommend movies and software, critique purchases, and discuss sports. It is how I found about 50 classmates for our next class reunion, and is a way for me to promote Summer Harmony Men's Chorus, a group I have sung with for over 20 years. I also find that it helps us at America On Wheels to promote events at the museum, and share photographs of changing exhibits. It is another tool...

In that case Google Plus will simply be a dormant part of my Gmail... :hammer: I can only take so much social media...

...and then you don't become friends with them on Facebook...just ignore the request. I have ignored requests from the past and the present...

That's BS. The notion that people will be "forced" to use Google+ is kind of like saying you'll be forced to watch channel 2 because you own a TV.

As others have said, Google+ (along with most everything else Google has to offer) will be consolidated into your google account. If you don't want to use it, don't. Nobody - including Google - will care one way or the other.

FB just doesn't fit in my lifestyle.
