Wife's former marriage produced a nice platinum engagement ring which was $6,200 16 years ago. It's Tiffany copy she had custom made by another jewler in N.Y. You could say it's a one of a kind copy. A guy offered $3,500, and I told him to go fly a kite. What do I do with it? Sure wish I could trade it for a paint job, car or something.

This jewlery buy back thing is a scam. Platinum was $406/oz the day they bought it and currently going for $1550/oz now.

No, these cash for gold things are the biggest scam out there!

The best return on your dollar will be at a good, reputable, independent jeweller. Get several offers, but they should be withing a few hundred bucks of each other if they know their stuff and truly are honest.

My wife works for a jeweller here in WI and she is always horrified at how little people get offered for their old jewellery by these cash for gold outfits.

One of my clients is a family owned jewelery outfit, same thing happens here. Have it assayed. By professionals.
 
Spoke to SWMBO about this. She says that the metal doesn't really enter the equation, it's all about the scrap weight. The stone is where the value of the ring lies. You need to find the size (carat weight), colour and clarity of the stone. Either way she says that you may be disappointed considering what you thought it might be worth.

Get a professional valuation, try to sell it privately if you can but if not go to a jeweller.
