MGB So that's what a MGB should drive like

Suspension work has finally been finished. 2" lower and poly all the way around and the addition of a front sway bar and all I can say is WOW. The B is now very precise on the road and corners absolutely fantastic. Driving up Angeles crest was a totally new and much faster experience.

Stewart,

Great job.... Have a query for you.

I am up to my eyeballs with a a frame-off for a '57 A and a '58 AH 100-6.. My '66 B is my driver and is destined for a refurb rather than a frame off restoration....

Here's the query.... Did you repaint the engine bay after you had pulled the engine?? If so... what were the major problems experienced? I do not wish to gut the B to refurb it so have considered just repainting the bay the body color and avoiding the undercarriage other than basic structural rebuild...

Any thoughts about this issue??? Thanks

Stewart - what is the height of your car at the center of each wheelwell - ground to bottom of side trim?

Tony
Front 14.25L 14.5R
Rear 15.5L 16R

That's with 2" springs in the back and 1 inch lowering blocks. Hopefully it will settle a little bit more as I'd like to see the numbers about the same as the front. Rear springs were done a week before the front and have about 700 miles on them.

The engine was pulled well before the bay was painted. The link in my sig will give some good info. The only hard part about the engine bay was removing the heater box. But a few naughty words a beer later it was out. Rest is pretty much unbolt and go. It took me about half a day to get the bay stripped and ready to go to the media blaster. A hair longer to get it back together.

Stewart,

Thanks for the comments... Had you to do it over again, would you gut and totally rebuild??? I am really torn about refurbing or doing a full 'frame' off... Yours has turned out soooo nice that you have caused me this delimma... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Stewart,

I fianally went through you entire thread... NICE job, my friend....

Thanks for your comments.... My B is feeling that I am neglecting her for two others.... She still runs but is much the worse for wear....

It would depend. This car is very special to me and I have no plans to ever sell it so I went whole hog on it.

If I was doing another car and the engine had to come out the engine bay is something I would definitely do again. But instead of stripping the parts by hand and then repainting I would have them blasted then powder coated. The end result of opening the hood and having everything matching and looking new is worth it.

WOW!! Ground to bottom of trim line?

That's 10" lower than my stcok '67 (24") on front! & 12" lower than my stock '79 (26") on front!

My racecar isn't even that low:

Oh, sounds better - what's it bottom of chrome to ground?

So, she's rubber bumper height. Nice.

Lookin' good. You don't have that huge amount of space in the wheel well anymore! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif Pics look much nicer. It'll prolly go down a little more once everything has settled. Did you relocate the front bump stops or just go with "lowered" stops up there?

I used the lowered bumpstops from VB. Hopefully the rear will drop some as I would like it to be about the same as the front with the tire tucked slightly into the wheel well. The front on the other hand can stay about where it is. While I would like the wheel to completely fill the front wheel well scraping is already a problem as entering driveways any faster than dead slow will cause scraping.

I kinda like the stance with the back slightly higher....looks good!

was gonna express bewilderment at your car scraping on driveways. Luckily I remembered that you have that nice bumper with integrated spoiler up there before I said anything. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

If drive ways become too much of a problem for ya, I'd be glad to trade cars with you. No front end scraping in drive ways or parking lots, but the exhaust does scrape occassionally. Plus it passed smog today... so you don't have to worry about it for a while... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's a beautiful car that appears to be sitting at rubber bumper car height so I'm confused why it scrubs when entering driveways unless they are particularly steep....my rubber bumper car that's at the same height doesn't scrape.

you have any RB cars with a Special Tuning front spoiler? I'm guessing that's approximately what that front end on his car is like. That and even in "flat" areas they like making steep'ish entrances to drive ways and parking lots around here...

Not the ST spoiler but the LE spoiler on my '79 & '74-1/2 Rubber bumper GT...now, I can see if the spoiler is scraping.
