After having lots of work done on the engine head and finding that the valve springs aren't compressed enough today I discovered that there is a CRACK in the casting right in the exhaust port. It was easily visible as soon as I pulled out the valves. :madder:
Obviously I am going to have to start looking for a different head since this one is just going to break again. Worse yet I had to order different valves for this head since it wasn't a 1300 head. Now who knows what I will find. Probably need the 1300 valves or something else.

Did you have the head machined in a shop? If so, you certainly should be due your money back. Even worth trying for compensation for the other costs you have incurred.

They should have picked that up after cleaning and before any work was done.

Oh bother!!

geez, Yiz, at least TRY to humble the shop! As Nick 'n Paul suggest, that SHOULD'A been caught!

Sounds like you got taken. Finding a crack in a casting is one of the basic skills you would expect from an engine service - ask for your money back and find a reputable shop.

I think he's gotta be "diplomatic" here... not THAT many shops around his neck-o-th'-woods...

And that is a large part of the problem and it is only getting worse. After all what modern japanese car needs its engine rebuilt?? By the time the engine is gone, the rest of the car is long since worn out. Even if there is a catastrophic failure you just swap in a different engine from a wreck. One of the shops I talked to in Tel Aviv a year or two ago who had experience with Triumphs closed up shop, probably because there just isn't that enough demand.
When I rebuilt the short block a year or so ago I think I called EVERY single engine shop in the country trying to find someone who could balance the crankshaft. No one even knew what I was talking about.
Unfortunately Triumphs were never sold in Jordan. If they were the local machinist could have found a spare engine there. Oh and to be slightly fair to the machinist, he did recommend that I look for a different head, because this one clearly has been machined and mucked around with way to many times. But he didn't say anything about the crack. I really have no idea if he found it and ignored it or just missed it altogether. The only reason I noticed it was that I was inspecting it with a powerful flashlight trying to figure out why the springs weren't compressed enough.

Well I feel vaguely better now. Just have to find a new engine head.
