So let's talk paint colors...

Does anyone here happen to know the paint code for that color?
Russ, I just went through all my Triumph color info, and saw no mention of a 'Dove' gray. Any chance you are thinking of 'Dolphin' gray?

Of course, there is also Pearl, Gunmetal, Slate, Silverstone and even Rhodium gray.

The factory colors are nice and judges like them if that's your bent.
However, many dealerships repainted cars as soon as they got them to whatever was popular at the time.
Dorothy Deens dealership in Ca did this often and painted two tones, metallics, and whatever.
Brit dealers did the same, especially early on when some of the factory paint colors were so off the wall (geranium, olive-yellow).
These were repaints from new on the show floor.
So would a metallic be proper period for the car, imho yes it would. Could you aregue this at a show, yes as any informed judge knows this...would they take points maybe, if you didn't have 'history' but who cares.
Metallics from the 50's tho were a very fine metallic and you can ask for that when getting the paint mixed.
I just saw a beautiful metallic green Mercedes 220 (50's model)with very fine original metallic paint.

For the metallic paints, size of flake can have a huge effect. The flake in my TR6 paint is very fine, which I prefer over the large flake look.

I've been told the very, very fine flake is in the "pearlescent" category while the larger flake is in the "metallic" category......

Talking to a friend that restores 50's Euro cars he told me that all of the metallics from that time frame on factory cars was very fine and I guess that would give the affect you are describing.
They have to request it when ordering as the common mettalic flake of today is too large.

This car is done in a Jag color: Opelescent Gunmetal Gray

It looks close to the color you like. I've been considering this color myself, but I'd like to go slightly darker, more like this old Alfa color.

It's more of a real gray color to me. The Gunmetal has more beige in it.

That jaguar BRG is nice but I've always liked them a tad greener rather than almost black....a C type would look good in anything.
That Alfa grey is a nice shade too.

The reason for having to scroll from left to right is the large pictures people post. When you post a picture that is wide, the entire post is forced to the wider format of the picture. If you are using 1024X768. like I do, and someone using 1280X1020 posts a full screen picture. You will be forced to scroll in order to read the text. The higher your resoultion the wider your screen.
A possible scenario is the person who posted the picture has a wide screen monitor. I don't have any experience with wide screen monitors. I use dual monitors for my work.
My guess is the members who do not see the problem are using a resolution equal to or higher than the resolution used by the person who posted the picture.

If possible please trim the size of the pictures you post. That will eliminate the need to scroll horizontally for those who use a lower resolution.

A comment on metallic colors. The Lotus has plenty of curves, vents and openings. All of these enhance the metallic effect when they reflect light and create shadows. The TR6 has mostly flat pannels. At least flat in comparison to the Lotus. The metallic will not pop as much from the TR6. Shawn's car looks good in his pictures. I'll bet it look great in the right light.

At one of the shows last year I saw a Healey that was painted a light metallic green. Aston Martin uses a similar color. The Healey looked great.

Hi Tab,

"Yeah"! That "Alfa" color would look just stunning on a TR3. I`ve had 3 Alfas (Duetto, Spider & Guieletta)or however its spelled but never that color. A friend of mine is an "Duetto" freak & I`m going to find out if he can get me that color code.

If you look at my avatar; Thats a pretty "Light Grey" color. What would that be called?

Thanx, Russ

It really makes the factory fender flares and cut line, just below the waist line, stand out.

The last car show I took it to, people had a hard time keeping their hands off the car. It seemed like they were petting it. I was parked right next to a white '74 TR6 that was restored to original and people looked it over. On mine they pondered, stared, came back and stared some more and then would run their fingers ever so lightly down the body lines. It was very odd. The owner of the white TR6 and I sat and watched the whole thing. We were laughing about me having to polish the car after the car show to get the finger prints off.

I kept an alert eye for things that could scratch the car, but was more flabbergasted than worried with fingers running along the body lines.

Shawn,

Looking at your TR6, I can't say I blame folks for that! That's a fabulous color, it really sets the car off!

Cheers

So I know that Triumph didn't use any metallic paint, and that metallic paint makes body work even harder, but I can't seem to get this paint color on a TR4a out of my head.

The paint is a deeper color in person. (photo lifted from Google search, but have seen it in person and man is it handsome)

Looks exactly like the color of my 330i. "Silbergrau" aka Metallic Silver Grey, 2001-2005.
