that a fan spray pattern of fresh oil arrayed around my rear universal joint where it meets the diff doesn't mean that I need to tighten the nut on the bottom of the pumpkin to stop the leak :cryin:

Guess the rear axle comes off again. There's no way to do it without having to disconnect the brakes is there?

pull the pumpkin?

i have been able to do the pinion seal from underneath as well

Yikes. The seal *is* do-able without yanking the whole affair out. If that's a new seal already leaking, you may have need of a sleeve on the shaft.

Someone should have the "real" name of the things: "Eezi-Sleeve" or "Speedy-Sleeve".... somethin' like that. I'd usually have a local machine shop do the work if the shaft O.D. was grooved.

Thank you, Patrick.

It might be just overfilled.
Or parked on a hill.
You can safely run them 1" below the fill hole with no ill effects.
Check the level and see if it drops over time before taking it apart.

shouldn't come out the front though should it?

Mine will ooze out the front seal (and axle seals) if it's overfilled.

This has happened when I've had the rear jacked up in the air and filled the diff to fill-plug level.

It should be done when the car's *level*.......or just leave the fill-plug off and drop the car down to let the excess drip out of the fill-plug hole. Then screw the plug in.

Just put a bit less than a quart in after it is drained and all will be well.

I wouldn't worry about a little "oooze", but if it is slinging oil all over the place I'd be concerned that the seal is shot.

If it were me I'd closely monitor the oil level. Ensure that it doesn't drop much below "full" (at or just below fill hole w the car level), and see if leaking stops once a "happy level" (no more than approx 1" below "full") is achieved.
-IF it stops once this "happy level" is reached, then just keep an eye on it to ensure that leak doesn't reappear.
-IF it continues to sling oil, and/or level continues to drop, you are probably gonna need new seals (I usually replace both the pinion & the axle seals all at the same time).

Personally, I hate leaks.
A little drip here or there I can live with.
But if it is leaking enough that I'm worried about the fluid level then I start replacing seals, gaskets, and anything else necessary to ensure worry-free motoring.
...but that's just me.
