Thanksgiving time at my grandmother and grandfather's
house me and my cousins played the Turkey Bowl
every year. I was very young. The real ring
leaders were between 15 to 18 years of age, I would
guess. Playing field was about 12 foot wide.
1 foot planter; two foot walkway; then the playing
field and grandma's hedge.
The big guys had to play on their knees which meant
every play was somewhat slow mo.
Oftentimes during a tackle, because I was so small,
they'd actually pick me up and toss me into
grandma's six-foot hedge ... like on top. Ouch.
Hard to crawl out.
Grandma used to yell: You kids stay outta that hedge,
from the bedroom window.
My cousins would squeal on me after such tackle:
"Grandma, Denny's in the hedge again!"
Loved the Turkey Bowls every year. And now I regret
what we did to Grandma's hedge.
